Ah, you're thinking of the definition of "independence" by which Mongolia is the world's most independent state, because nothing depends on it.
We're plugged into the European economy, but it's by choice. We've been conquered often enough to understand that we are in too good of a position to not be tempting to greater powers around us, and too small to protect ourselves. Europe made a better offer.
