Don't get me wrong, I like CoT too.
But I prefer that the last replied to thread pops to the top.
And tells me who last posted.
And lights up threads I haven't read on all computers I use, properly.
Things I like about CoT:

sidebar links and quotes
snarkiness
...

The problem with this approach is you lose your spatial orientation. If you are looking for a thread you can't just "know" about where it is on the page anymore.

Vanilla is the name of some forum software (cf. fruitshow). One of our number has an implementation which is currently by invitation. Invitations are not difficult to come by...

Vanilla is great for getting peoples email addresses too.
Just 'forget your password' and then it will reveal your email. Not that hard if you know or can guess a login.
