What I find hard to understand is how our neocon masters don't see what puppets they have been. Unless, of course, it is also aligned with their agenda.

Well, that's just it. Are they puppets or puppet masters. I'm sure there is a whole lot of puppeteering going on though.

The neocons want to believe that they create reality. Therefore every data point which conflicts with their image of reality must be deleted [1]. Any agent of another nation that tells desirable fictional tales will be believed, while evidence to show that person being an enemy agent shall be strictly forbidden from discussion [2]. In the event that we destroy the enemies of an enemy nation, the enemy nation shall remain on the axis of evil and shall be called "surrounded" [3].

Further, the enemy of the necons is the US government. "Starving the beast" is the euphemism for the overthrow and destruction of the US.

1 - in some cases govt departments get completely defunded when they contradict the officially approved fantasy. Counting pureed salmon? Not any more you don't.
2 - Ahmed Chalabi is the prime example here. Agent of Iran, told Iran which of their codes that the US had broken, causing the Iranians to switch to unbroken codes. He was also the prime source for the fairy tales of Iraqi WMD (they have them on every street corner! they can launch in 45 minutes!) and the fairy tales that Iraqis will welcome us (they'll throw flowers at the troops!).

In co-dependent relationships folks are both puppet and puppetmaster pulling at the strings.
