Sanding our assholes with 150 grit.

About this competition...

... between crazyontap.com and ectopia.us... Yes, of course it's a competition, but only in the sense that there needs to be a "winner". There's no point of two different forums serving the same purpose (being the new ?off), it'll just water down both. An ?off divided against itself cannot stand.

Anyway, I'm voting with my feet for this place. Great job copying the FB forums. Just lose the orange color, I'm seeing composite bright blue when I look away from the screen.

As much as I'd prefer Simon Lucy as moderator, I can also see a benefit in the code of this board being open, since anyone could potentially make a new board should the need arise.

Now let's get back on the topic of sphincters and related material. I'm getting withdrawals reading about different peoples cellular phone's designs.

After Simon's protracted hissy fit last night regarding a simple link from here to his site, I think he'd make a TERRIBLE moderator.  I don't want anybody that excitable/intolerant having the delete button.

And there is no competition.  The vast majority is here and Simon will never ever take his site down (nor should he, as it's his damn site and he didn't enter it in any contest.)

As far as I'm concerned Simon Lucy has precedence of being a fair moderator. So he ended up storming out in a tantrum, that doesn't take away from the fact that he was balanced as a moderator, unlike certain others...

Being a non-confrontational goody two-shoes is the kind of qualities a good moderator is made of IMHO.

Since I was a moderator when Simon was I have experience with his (my recollection may be hazy) somewhat less liberal attitude toward what ought be posted and what not.  I remember re-authorizing quite a number of posts that Simon had deleted.

Instead of trailing off with a little prissy elipsis, how about you explain your ridiculous and half-assed comments?  How was I an unfair moderator, since that seems to be what you are implying?

For that matter, how do you know whether Simon was/was not fair?  Did you audit his deletion history?

Ectopia was critical during the transition, however it seems obvious that ?cot is the replacement for ?off. Unless AHA gets power hungry or we start getting pop-up ads, I can't see that changing.

BTW: I wouldn't complain about occasional Google Ads, and would, uh, "evaluate" sponsors if it helped offset hosting and domain fees.

Ectopia will continue to function, and will probably evolve in its own right (e.g. Ectopia is Kuro5hin versus the ?cot Slashdot).

As far as Simon's moderation - Simon was a great moderator on ?off, and both he and the Norotious T.A.W. were extremely hands-off and fair. I can't imagine how he could be questioned about that (I was much more prone to being an "Activist" moderator, such that the Nortorious T.A.W. undeleted a couple that I had deleted).

Dennis -

Maybe Simon's heavy-handedness had waned by the time you were a mod, but when I was in there, I undeleted a lot of Simon's stuff.

Now "a lot" is a subjective term I guess, but to me, it was a lot.

I think I only ever restored two things that MarkTAW ever deleted.

Well to be fair I don't know what Simon moderated, except for the testimony of other moderators that hardly anything was ever deleted. Combined with that, moderator powers didn't seem to go to his head.

Whereas YOU went batshit and shat all over the forums because you could. Hence not particularly balanced, which was what I hinted at :-)

For one day.

To prove a point.

And in classic ?off style, everyone made a HUGE deal out of nothing.

In fact, it was maybe two hours, not even a day.

I stormed out?

I got pissed off but I didn't storm off anywhere.

True, Simon didn't storm, he just cried a lot.

And I sort of understand, after thinking about it, why Simon got pissed in the first place.  People were setting it up like if CoT became more popular than Ectopia, the natural thing would be for Simon to close Ectopia, as anything else would be indecent and childish.

Which is of course ridiculous because Ectopia has been there for months and Simon never entered it into any contest.

So I see how that bit, at least, pissed him off.

I still wouldn't be comfortable with him as a moderator unless of course I was also a moderator so that I could keep tabs on him.

I think the direct polar opposites, yin-yang thing would actually be GOOD for this board, anyway, and I'd pledge not to put any animated bananas anywhere most of the time.  :-)
