corporate re-education is so fun!

american psycho

This came in on my netflix queue. I never had the chance to see it when it came out.

I am not sure what the point was at the end. He was just imagining it all? So the whole movie was a dream?

So this couple here read the book and it "inspired" them to go on a real life serial killing rampage.

The wife only was in jail for 12 years and then was released. Canadian sentences, eh?

WTF, Gloria Steinem is Christian Bale's mother, that is nuts.

DiCaprio was going to play the lead.

Steinem called DiCaprio and said the movie was an abomination and she would lead feminists throughout the world to boycott him and all his future work if he didn't drop out of the women-hating project.

This allowed Steinem's son Christian Bale to take the part, jump starting his career.

Ha ha, when Homolkya was released, they tried to put conditions on her and a Canadian judge ruled it was not fair to have conditions.

She married Luka Magnotta, a porn star, and moved to a mansion in the Bahamas where they had a kid.

They are now notorious for posting torture videos on youtube.

Yeah, good move releasing her!

Yeah, I've seen it a couple of times, and I'm still not sure about the ending.

[spoiler]
The empty appointment book that progressively became more and more disturbed, and then the guy that we saw him kill shows up alive...

He would confess things throughout the movie and people would ignore him. At the end talking to his lawyer the guy doesn't know who he really is and when he says stuff the lawyer stares through him and repeats things, like he's a robot or character in a play reading lines and not a person.

When he goes to the apartment where he had the bodies and it's all been cleaned up you think at first, WTF, so the real estate agent doesn't want to get a dud property and disposed of the bodies discretely? But then it starts to be more like it's some random apartment and he's imagining that he had been killing people there and storing the bodies in the fridges, bathtubs and closets.

The ending was intended to be open-ended, however it leans overwhelmingly to the "it was all a dream" conclusion.

Regarding Homolka and Bernardo, several things-

1) American Psycho has jack shit to do with what they did. He was a prolific violent rapist prior to the release of that movie, and as a couple they had started drugging and raping (as a couple) victims. Their first murder was actually her sister, and was accidental after they drugged her and raped her (yes, both of them). That turned a violent rapist onto the idea of murder.

2) She got a sweetheart deal because at the time the police saw her as, essentially, a victim who only went along with things under duress. The reality later came out when his lawyer turned over video tapes he had been hiding. Tapes that showed her as an eager and willing accomplice. She is the most hated woman in Canada, despised wherever she goes, so it wouldn't be a surprise if she moved out of country.

He will be in jail forever. She has been ostracized from Canadian society forever.

Right, the movie came out after their rampages, but the husband had a copy of the book and claimed at one point his crimes were partly inspired by reading the book. Sure, he's not a reliable witness, but, well, he did do similar things to the book.

To be fair, he didn't claim it but rather the prosecution did. They found the book and in the same way that video games get the blame everytime a kid does something stupid, the cause-effect was discerned.

After I read about that I read about the pig farm guy. They say he gave the ground up meat of his victims only to friends and neighbors and not to customers of his pig farm. I'm kind of skeptical of that though, aren't they just saying that to prevent a general panic over what really happened?

Both Bernardo and the Pickton case were examples of *incredible* police incompetence. They had many tips that Pickton was killing prostitutes, over many years -- including one woman who managed to escape his murder process -- but they didn't believe them. Essentially the same thing happened with Bernardo when he was "but" a mass rapist.

Yeah, I was reading that there were dozens of people with very specific tips about Pickton, including first person accounts and, since most of the victims were first nations women, the RCMP said "Oh, these indian women are just a bunch of drunks who are jealous of a hardworking white farmer." Later they "apologized" for having blown off so much good information from witnesses over the years, but it wasn't much of an apology, more along the lines of "sorry you fuckers were offended, but seriously, fuck you all, all glory to the hypnocannibal".
