Y'all are a bunch of wankers!

New variant on 419 scam

Got a new variation on the Nigerian Letter Scam.

This one is purporting to be from a SGT DANIEL who relates how he and STAFF SGT KENNETH BUFF found the money:

SOURCE OF MONEY: SOME MONEY IN VARIOUS CURRENCIES WERE DISCOVERED IN BARRELS AT A FARMHOUSE NEAR ONE OF SADDAM HUSSEINS OLD PALACES IN TIKRIT-IRAQ DURING A RESCUE OPERATION, AND IT WAS AGREED BY STAFF SGT KENNETH BUFF AND I THAT SOME PART OF THIS MONEY BE SHARED AMONG BOTH OF US BEFORE INFORMING ANYBODY ABOUT IT SINCE BOTH OF US SAW THE MONEY FIRST. THIS WAS QUITE AN ILLEGAL THING TO DO, BUT I TELL YOU WHAT? NO COMPENSATION CAN MAKE UP FOR THE RISK WE HAVE TAKEN WITH OUR LIVES IN THIS HELL HOLE OF WHICH MY BROTHER IN-LAW WAS KILLED BY A ROAD SIDE BOMB LAST TIME.

Of course, there's a real link to the Washington Post to give it that aura of authenticity.

Wow, this is really plausible.  Except that I've never known a soldier who didn't pepper his speech with "motherfuckers" and "goddamns".

Experience being the best teacher, and all.

Don't charge too much, especially at first.

I saw a news thingy on these scams on Dateline or something a short while ago, and I was surprised to see a heart surgeon or someone equally prominent get taken in by one of these. I was even more surprised that he would admit it on national television.

I think I saw the same program -- didn't he get taken for some absurdly huge amount of money -- like $300k ?

Well, of COURSE he'll talk about it on television -- how much do you think they're paying him?

He's behind $300,000.

It was quite a bit of money, his whole life savings I believe.  What was even more weird, if I recall correctly, he spent it on a bunch of money-shaped paper that was painted black, and they told him that if he washed it off with this special liquid, there would be money underneath.  Guess what, no money underneath.  I almost felt like the guy deserved to lose the money, the con was so transparent.
