A bunch of cunts, mostly in the Australian sense. Except that one guy.

"Crossing the line"

Hmm.  It just occurred to me that "Psychopathic behavior" could be referring to writing suicide notes.

Thus, Joel is not calling the ?off denizens psycho's, he's only calling the ?off denizens who write suicide notes psycho's.

Now, that could be a little insensitive, but I can see where he has a point.  I mean, Joel is running a business.  He wants to keep the place up-beat.  Having people write suicide notes on his ?off forum could give the place a bad name.

Although technically a person who writes a suicide note is a depressive, not a psycho, so he's still got it wrong.

Oh, well.

He also said the forum was 10 members and "some participants" (note the plural) enganged in "downright psychopathic behavior."

So, at least 20% of the forum.

meh.
there is a certain type of person who would find any reaction short of endlessly repeating "oh my goooood its sooooo awful' to suicide absolutely shocking.

the fact that many posters pretty much just carried on as normal would have been utterly foreign to such people.

Joel is a good writer and is used to putting his thoughts down in writing...He wrote exactly what he meant to.

best you could say is that he was in such a hurry to disown us that he failed to make it sound convincing or reasonable.

I particularly liked the way he entirely avoided mentioning the suicide itself.  talk about psychopathic.

People were doubtful, in shock, and possibly apathetic.

They were rubbernecking. Joel also knows the various studies about how people will look on at a tragedy and not do anything to help.

Psychpaths are "remorseless predators who use charm, intimidation and, if necessary, impulsive and cold-blooded violence to attain their ends."

http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/p960239.html

They have a complete disregard for human life, and would kill a human as easily as someone else might kill a fly. Hannibal Lecter is the prototypical psychopath. Charles Manson and Ted Bundy are more examples.

In any case, Joel's wording is sufficiently ambiguous, that you can read whatever you want into it. That's probably the point.

He already retracted one obviously incorrect statement, so why not this one?

Why call more attention to the unnoticed? Those who know do. Those who do not, need not.

Blows my theories about drawing the flies from JoS though. Maybe he'll put up a subtle referral link to here. :)

Probably just the right thing said at the right time. No doubt he's thought about it before...

No, he was pretty much a prick about the whole thing.  Extremely dismissive, condescending, and I think the only reason he mentioned the closure at all was that otherwise he was afraid to be embarrassed publicly when we all mentioned it en masse.

Why do you think he played it down?

"10 regular members"  Actually we have nearly 50

"A bunch of psychopaths" not really

He tried to make it sound like it was this cute little experiment gone awry that never amounted to anything.  The fact is that the content of ?off was 500x better than Joel himself has ever produced in his life, and he was embarrassed by it.

You also missed the part where he claimed the moderators (i.e. me) stood around and did nothing.

Not that I know him in the slightest but from what I gather it pretty much fits. What would you guys have expected?

I do wonder about the moderator bit though. Why even put that out there? It doesn't serve anyone.

I suppose you could speculate about legal crap and McKinstry and figure that pinning some oversight on a volunteer mod isn't such a horrible move.

TAW, that's the part that pissed me off.

When I wrote him, I made a point of saying multiple times that you were one of the lead guys in tracking down information and that there were other people telling him to get him, how to make himself vomit, etc.

I applaud what you did and I think you went to extraordinary effort considering you are k's of miles away.

I mean come on... the Canadian Embassy got involved!

Yeah, basically he's playing the frame game. Wrap the whole thing up in a digestible sound-byte sized package that people can take away with them.

The fact that he was willing to verbally kick us in the nuts just after someone died and called us cold blooded murderers to protect his own reputation is just sickening.

Pretty much fits?  Subjective things like "small board" "psychos" are one thing, but he outright lied about the size of the thing and strongly implied that only a handful of jerks hung out there, which is quite apparently crap to anyone who knows.

I wrote him too, I just wanted him to change the one word "psychopath" to something less offensive. It's been... almost 24 hours and still no word.

>>> ?off was 500x better than Joel himself has ever

I dunno about that... often that much more interesting, but probably only 378x "better."

>>> You also missed the part where he claimed the moderators (i.e. me) stood around and did nothing.

Joel's whole post about ?off is total bullshit, it's not really worth trying to figure out.  I figure it's some combination of fear of being held responsible and fear of bad publicity (e.g. links from Wikipedia).  The stated reason is just completely made up.  If he never participated, how did he know what was going on?

It's a case of Stalin's photograph with history being redefined the way he wants it.

Unfortunately there are too many people around who know what actually happened.
