Y'all are a bunch of wankers!

Open source

Someone above me is thinking about making this project open source.
Is that the kiss of death, or what?

Has any commercial company ever done that to a product of theirs and survived to tell the tale, unless it was IBM or something?

A lot of stuff in the apache project started out commercial. BEA donated some stuff. Blender, though it was the kiss of death for the company. Most companies just release dead products they can profit from anymore, see whatever SAPDB is called these days and interbase. There's more that I forgot.

My feeling is most successful open source projects started out that way, but that's likely to change some companies aren't able to make money of older stuff or don't see software as their a core business anymore.

Red Hat, but they started with a good codebase that they hadn't invested any money in.
