8, 8 days until Disney! Ah ha ha!

Suicide rate at Google worldwide is second only to Foxconn

Pretty shocking statistics. Guess the stress there is pretty intense.

So Google thinks the solution to this is to have the employees take classes in yoga, meditation, anger management and just learning how to "buck up and deal".

Ok. Why shouldn't that same sort of approach be accepted at iPhone manufacturing FoxConn as well?

A few more actions they've taken.

But is it enough?

That's the question many must be asking themselves after the loss of a loved one.

You lot are retarded. Moral outrage does not trump data.

China had a suicide rate of 22.23 per 100,000 in 2010. This is the 9th highest in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

Foxconn employs 1.2m individuals.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hon_Hai_Precision_Industry
In the same year, 2010, which was pretty horrible for them, had 18 suicide attempts, with 14 deaths. Let's round that down to 1 million, making their suicide rate 1.4 per 100,000.

By that reconning, they did 15 times better than the national average.

Extrapolating further, if those folk had not been employed by FoxConn, 220 of them would have 'offed themselves, if we are keeping in line with national statistics.

And looking at '09 and '11 figures, Foxconn does even better.

So, yay for Foxconn!

China rates should be compared to other employed people in cities, where it is 30 times higher than average.

You are comparing a rate that includes many impoverished unemployed with no jobs and farmers whose land has been confiscated by communist party officials.

##You are comparing a rate that includes many impoverished unemployed with no jobs and farmers whose land has been confiscated by communist party officials.

That's almost the point.

What do you think the 1.2m Foxconn workers would be doing if they weren't working for Foxconn?

Or put another way. Again. As I have pointed out before, despite our moral outrage and doo dah about slave and labour camp conditions, most Foxconn workers would rather be working there than slaving in rice paddies.

And if they don't like it, they can quit. cf. The 150 who threatened mass suicide earlier this year. Foxconn told them to fuck off with no payoff.

Well, people prefers to be tortured than to die too.

Clearly not the ones that chose suicide (death) though.

>> Suicide rate at Google worldwide is second only to Foxconn

First thing to rule out if it were to be a coincidence, it's statistics.
150 mass suicide workers in a 1.2M company it's 150 / (1.2 * 1e6) = 0.000125 = 0.0125%.

If Google employs more people than Foxconn, it'd better estimate at least the observed suicide rate at Foxconn.
And take the proper measures to prevent that.

Like Nokia, when it closed down the development center comprising 150 in my city.
They had guards on the balcony when they announced it, fearing someone might lose head and try to jump :))

Obviously everyone knew long before what was happening and those who didn't agree on Nokia's relocation package made the relish of local companies, who were fighting to get them.

Kind of being concerned on what will happen to those poor NASA workers :P

Well, sure.  If you're tired of Google, the BEST place to work in the UNIVERSE, then I guess suicide seems like a viable alternative.

Or it could just be the clueless wannabe's they hire straight out of college, have never faced failure in the real world before.
