Trying being a slave. It wasn't pretty. All this talk of freedom is a little short sited. Persian/Spartan, all the same to us.

Two things to note.

1, Leonidas, the Spartan king, fought to the bitter end, so you could assume the 300 was his personal bodyguard.

2.  1,000 Thesbians stayed to fight alongside the Spartans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae

"The Spartans had pledged themselves to fight to the death, while the Thebans were held as hostage against their will. However, a contingent of about 700 Thespians, led by general Demophilus, the son of Diadromes, refused to leave with the other Greeks, but cast their lot with the Spartans."

Poor Thebans.  hehe.

America had slaves and we broke free from England because we wanted to be a free and independent nation, not that we didn't want to have slaves. That's what the Greeks meant. I mean how do you think the Athenians had enough free time to philosophize all the time? Or the Spartans had enough time to practice martial arts and such?

And they do mention the large group of other Greeks however the reason they don't talk about them much is because the story is being told by a Spartan to get all his troops riled up (Which is also the reason they made the Immortals faces so ugly when they got there masks ripped off and stuff, they had to demonize the enemy to give their troops more morale).

"However, a contingent of about 700 Thespians"

Well, they were doomed from the start. They were just pretending to be soldiers.
