Teens really are different

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/03/070311202019.htm - Scientists Find Hormone Activity Explains Adolescent Mood Swings

<quote>
The "raging hormones" of puberty are known to produce mood swings and stress for most teenagers, making it difficult to cope with this period of life. Until now, the specific causes of pubertal anxiety have not been identified, making it harder to understand and treat adolescent angst.

In the current edition of the journal Nature Neuroscience, researchers led by Sheryl S. Smith, PhD, professor of physiology and pharmacology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, report findings demonstrating that a hormone normally released in response to stress, THP, actually reverses its effect at puberty, when it increases anxiety.

It's amazing most teens survive, but somehow they do.

We can see it on their face.

I always knew that whole acne thing was just a cover up.

It's hormones seeping to the surface isn't it?!

I think they'll also find that one neurohormone or another that's common in puberty (perhaps the same one as increases anxiety) increases learning ability. See purple's do-it versus learn-it thread yesterday.

Excellent question. We seem to want to medicate everyone into being the lowest common deniminator.

anxiety and stress (aka adrenalin) are _strongly_ related to learning...if the stress levels increase naturally at teenager hood it is because the teen needs to be doing a heap of learning at that point.

take that out and the teens will turn into me.  I dont remember anything unless its been tattooed on my butt and painfully removed with a razor.  and even then it doesn't really stick.

Lifelong learners are all teens at heart (or in the adrenal gland or wherever).
