Nightdriving (Formula One)

Is this a goer?,,-6458348,00.html

Offhand I'm unaware of any televised night-time motorsports staged outside of a stadium or dragstrip - apart from odd rally events out in the bush.

What level of lighting would be required to
a) (possibly optionally) avoid installing headlights on the vehicles
b) provide decent TV coverage ??

I don't think the level of lighting is the issue--after all tennis, cricket and other sports are quite successfully played at night. I think the problem has more to do with the area that has to be lit. Sports fields are much smaller than GP circuits.

Le Mans is a 24-hour race..

I can't imagine they want to install lights on F1 cars (electrical and aerodynamic issues) so I presume they would have to light the whole circuit.

It seems like a really stupid idea to me - imagine what would happen if there was a lighting failure.., uh, maybe they'd have to put lights on the cars for safety/insurance reasons?  Makes no sense to me.

Unless they already told the constructors to anticipate this?
