Vista Development

Vista's new flashy UI elements and the development tools to build them suggest a subtle but noticeable shift. A shift to more focus on the graphical quality of the applications and tools we use.

I've played games for many years. When I first began gaming on the pc, there were tons of independent developers making games. Those games were often as good or better than the industrial offerings. Over time, graphics have come to play a larger role in games.

The importance of graphics has grown such that indie developers and even small indie teams just cannot compete. Large development shops have entire art departments with a plethora of artists, modelers, texturers, etc...

Which brings us to my point. Graphics aren't always so important in business development. Queue the millions of ASCII interfaces still in use... But they do have some impact. How long do you think it will be before IT depts and programming shops start hiring artists? Or will programmers take on new artistic skills and just get by?

Uhm... most shops around here have already "artists" or at least high skilled Graphical designers, but not because of vista, but because of the web. Vista will not change much that.

Yes, the apps will need to get prettier. Look at the "cool" apps on OSX.  Being pretty is part of the deal now.

Yes I was teying to make my paragraphs all pretty. I had thought about web dev already using a great deal of art.

I'm gathering from so much of the bad code out there that they went the other direction and trained art people to write web pages.

But you are right, Vista won't change that.

Its graphical capabilities aren't web-centric, but all about sexy clients.

I'm thinking business does not care so much if their widgets are pretty. Maybe ISVs need fret over it, they are selling something. The comparison between different looks might be some factor in purchase decisions.

But the stuff that happens in house will get by with whatever artistic talent developers lack or have.

What makes Vista better for business? Other than the RI/MPAA?
