Y'all are a bunch of wankers!

fred on security is an idiot

nice link, thanks ward.

just out of interest, why _do_ terrorists insist on blowing up airlines?  clearly if their sole goal was killing innocents, they would do something less prone to error, like blow up a bomb in the airport.

so equally clearly their goals are _not_ simply to kill innocents.  their goals are to make political points, hence the targeting of aircraft and large, impressive targets like the world trade center.

surely that means that these precautions are _not_ pointless?
if the average terrorist is more inclined to making a political point than killing people then precautions designed to catch and neutralise big, error prone attempts make sense.

hence it does make sense to concentrate more on the people entering the aircraft than those at the airport.

hence fred is an idiot.

poor chap.  he may never realise this.

perhaps to reduce the # flights, keeping total CO2 emissions down?

But as the story AG linked to in the previous post shows, all the security precautions that have been put into place aren't doing any good if a there's a big group of people (airport employees) who can easily get around them.

Why do they make pilots go through the same "no liquids that won't fit into this little ziplock" routine as everyone else?  Surely if a terrorist gets onto the flight deck, he's not gonna make a bomb out of his shampoo, he's gonna fly the plane into a convenient building, right?  So that check is pure theatre, even if you're right about their motivations.

Besides, maybe terrorists think airplanes are an affront to Allah.

Aren't pilots interviewed before they get the job? And they have more to lose. Being gainfully employed and all.

And finally ... why would a pilot need liquids or razor blades to commandeer the cockpit?

It's one less rule for the goons to remember.

That's not to confer any approval of the general hysteria, just a cynical observation of the necessisty to keep thing simple for the disguised unemployed manning the checkpoints. They're meant to treat everybody the same (aside from those flying on govermental, chartered or privately owned planes who are presumably not going to fly into Mt Rushmore.)
