Mech counters are nice though. I used one once to count the number of times an audio paging system got used in a day - we used it to estimate the number of relay operations that would occur in the lif of a system. The circuit needed no power supply, which was cool - there was enough juice in the relay drive to flip the counter, with a simple RC circuit.

It was about 50 hits a day, IIRC.

There's a limit to how fast a physical counter can increment - the time it takes to push & release the button. Etc. etc.
