RIP Philo

Oh, the irony!

Mark's comments on the meta-discussion at JoS:

"I also blame the multiple forums for diluting the whole."

One thing that strikes me is the quality of the posts from two, three or four years back. The combination of the forum set up and the posters then allowed for some pretty well written threads. Possibly the system is not so well set up to deal with the needs of todays posters.

It's simple.

The people here aren't very interesting, and the topics aren't very controversial. I blame Joel for both.

1. The topics aren't very controversial because Joel has stopped being controversial.

2. The people here aren't very interesting because whatever moderation scheme exists doesn't really allow them to be interesting, i.e. let them talk about what they really want to talk about instead of just "what's the best way to XYZ?" which, inherently, aren't going to generate many responses.

I also blame the multiple forums for diluting the whole. I might be interested in the Business & Design of software, but I'm not two separate forums interested in it, so each one gets a fraction of the total traffic & a fraction of the total brains looking at it.

The design of the forum itself - branching vs. non branching, login vs. no login, has relatively little to do with it.

The best way to find a more interesting & active forum is to start following a a more interesting & active guru.

oh my great aching balls of fire.  self-examination and personal intellectual honesty isn't a particularly large part of marky bois character, is it.

ah well.  on the bright side, maybe he is just cresting a personal wave of discovery and understanding that will allow him to see things a little more clearly from now on.

Meh. I've been saying the same thing since Joel first split the forums.

WTF? You didn't post it very long ago.  I've been following Stephen's posts (with amusement at how bent out of shape the JoS'ers are about his "mean" comments - their eyeballs would fall out if they ever came here) closely, but it's only here on CoT that I do the "refresh like a gerbil on speed" trick.

I also believe the rot set in with the multiple forums.

oh, I totally agree.  luckily for everyone thats not the point of this thread.

would you like me to explain it to you?  or do you think that you might be able to get a handle on it if you reread the entire thing again, carefully, and think on it for a while?*

I wasn't initially aware the thread had a point. Is this a new feature on Cot?

So it's all about Blah!
