Americans consuming too many calories from beverages

If you're trying to lose weight, give up the soda and fruit juice!  Those Starbucks fancy drinks aren't helping either ...

I gave up soda 4 months ago. I've lost 17 pounds.  No new exercise, no other diet measures.

> About 21 percent of calories consumed by Americans over the age of 2 come from beverages, predominantly soft drinks and fruit drinks with added sugars, the panel said in its report. There has been a huge increase in sugar-sweetened drinks in recent decades, primarily at the expense of milk, which has clear nutritional benefits.

21 percent? wow. I drink a lot of milk because I like it in my coffee (but no sugar, means 50 calories per cup, the price of waking up).

I don't even buy OJ anymore. The weirdest stuff is the fiber-fortified OJ -- um, an orange has same amount of fiber as a glass of fiber-fortified OJ it says on the carton, so why don't I just eat a goddamm, unbranded orange? (bonus fiber points if you eat the peel.)

Oh yeah I read in a body building manual years ago that the best way to down a lot of calories (those folks sometimes consume 4-5000 calories a day) is by making protein shakes, egg smoothies, etc. Your body can consume far more calories in a shake before getting grossed out than in a dry meal.

Surely the reverse is true as well.

I drink water, coffee and beer/wine and pretty much nothing else. I find sodas and squash drinks disgusting.

I think sodas are what caused me to pass the 200pd mark.

You want more time for what? To drink more OJ?

Seems that the slowness of pealing an orange is a natural damper effect on how many you can consume.

Are pure fruit fruit drinks bad? I look at them and see lots of sugar.  Even if there is no sugar added, it seems there is a lot of sugar in them. Eat the fruit, not the drink?

Not bad, but not as good as the fruit itself. And yes, they have a ton of sugar in.
