Checking In

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been involved here much. I don't have an internet account right now. I'm at a cafe and I noticed they have wireless, which is not all that common around here. I think the McDonalds has wireless but they charge you for it by the minute.

So I am sitting here with my DATE who I met through eHarmony. This is the third date. She is really cool and owns her own business and she doesn't seem to have any weird baggage. It's nice to talk to someone without them misinterpreting everything you say, if you know what I mean.

I got the casts off too. Still have a limp, but whatever.

I guess you think she is a redhead but no, she's from Tanzania. Her father was a journalist and her mother was some kind of activist.

I have some job leads and will pick something up soon I am sure. It may have a sales component rather than being pure IT stuff.

So if you don't hear from me again, all is fine.

Yeah, yeah, whatever...  (you're the troll who got beat up by your ex's brother, right?)

Hey there. I don't think I'll say a lot as I'm focussing on my date - I was just looking up something on line for her and I noticed there was a signal so I sent a couple emails and thought I'd update you guys. The troll accusations I don't really respond to since they don't really make sense. I mean, what about my posts is a troll? says that:

"[A] troll is someone who posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding".

I think it's fair and reasonable to say that that's the generally accepted definition, so I don't want to argue that it's not. Take it up with wikipedia if you disagree with that.

There's nothing about these updates about the crap I've been through that meets any of that definition.

So that's why I don't respond to it. I would say that looking at my last update, there was trolling going on, but it certainly wasn't me doing it, and I did not take the bait.

Likewise, rather than take the bait this time, I'm swimming on to less treacherous waters.

It's too bad really since I think I do have some interesting things going on and I don't mind letting people know - hello and sharkfish in particular gave me a lot of useful advise and I appreciate it and say hello to them and wish them well.

But to the real negative element here, I can only say that hey, there's a big wide world out here and it's better to move on than to deal with the negative people. Despite all that, I wish you well and hope that you find whatever peace it is you are looking for in your life.

Have a good one, everybody.

Does anyone else find these John Smith posts fascinating.  Fiction or not it's always entertaining.

It can be a fine line between taking an extreme position as an intellectual exercise and what I would call trolling, posting something just to get a reaction.  But a long line of BS stories purporting to be true is certainly on the trolling line.  And, if you think Wikipedia is the last word, note that their first recorded example is similar to what John Smith does.

I suspect if he spends much more time posting here and not paying attention to his date, this will be the last time she goes out with him.

Exactly.  Who cares if they are true?

Ward why so worked up over accidentally falling for an amusing fiction in an anonymous internet chat board?

Dan, I think you are wussing out.  If you are, come and join CoT.  We can forgive.

I'm not worked up, but I don't have any patience for that type of BS.  Actually, that's exactly the right word - when someone is posting this sort of thing, I'm impatient for them to get to the point and reveal that it's all made up, or that they're just reposting someone else's stories or whatever.

Right.  Let's rush through the john smith drama so we can hear you tell us that you live across the street from a library one more time. *yawn*

Now that you mention it, the library - right across the street, yes - is a better place to get some fiction.

Oh, no.

This is going to end with him sleeping on Tanzanian Girl's couch while she has sex with her real boyfriend, isn't it?

That's not the punchline all this buildup is for, I hope.
