Political cynicism

In jail until after Novembers's Australian federal elections and gagged until after the American presidential race ...

Pure theatre.

What the hell, the guy is an american who goes and trains with al qaeda then spends his days shooting grenades at US and other soldiers. And he gets 6 months in jail for this? For being a terrorist? How did that happen?

Meanwhile, there are lots of Afghan citizens who never did anything, can't even get a trial, and will spend the rest of their lives being held without even an indictment in Guatanomo Bay. The Afghan guys are not traitors, but Hicks is! How is this justice?

Oh, Ok, he's an Australian. Well let's hope they at least deport him to Australia and let the people down there deal with him.

It's a tad more complex than that (though it's been instructive how differently the USA citizen taken in Afghanistan has been treated)

The supine position taken by the Aussie cabinet was all about the precious relationship:

Hicks will be a marked man for a long time for his stupidity but the fact that it took five years to dig him out of Gitmo is a poor reflection on the current Australian Goverment. Imagine the reaction in America if Australia had an American (who had not broken American or Australian law) in solitarty confinement on Nauru for 5 years.
