Spam Filter? My fruitshow forum is getting spammed, anyone have solutions?
If anyone has Wayne's changes to fight spam, please email it to me at Ted_Graham@yahoo.com Thanks, Ted Wayne's on vacation. You can browse the SVN, but it's 6 months old and I'm not sure it has the spam filter upgrades yet.
In the meantime, have you tried Bad Behavior? http://www.bad-behavior.ioerror.us/ Ted: did you ever email Wayne?
http://www.crazyontap.com/topic.php?TopicId=17195#199807 Mark: Hah! Caught you! You made-up-name-poster you! <andrey butov>
Wow, I wonder why that happened, it must be a bug in the FruitShow forum. </andrey butov> Hey, if you're going to use a made up name, it might as well be as made up as possible. I emailed Wayne twice, didn't get a response.
As for bad-behavior, I installed it this weekend. I think I did it right, but I'm not a php guy and I couldn't find anything approaching directions. It seems to be working, but I couldn't find any directions on how to test it. My forum is at http://www.LinkedCells.com/forum How do I verify that BadBehavior is working? No "Powered by FruitShow" link at the bottom? Bad boy. I'm not sure whether we should help you or not.
At least you left the banana icon. ;-) Re: Bad Behvior Open up /_lib/main.php and put in require_once("/path/to/bad-behavior/bad-behavior-generic.php"); immediately after the comment block at the top. It doesn't stop all spam, but it can cut it down. Re: Getting a more recent version of FruitShow You also seem to have a very old version of fruitshow, the gray horizontal lines are from quite a few versions ago, even if it's what's available for download from sourceforge. This is the version I'm using, which itself is quite old (6 months), not sure if it has the spam blocking features or not. It's the same version that's available via SVN. I believe Wayne put it on SVN because I needed stronger spam filters, but I honestly don't remember. http://www.marktaw.com/temp/Trunk.zip The spam filter (if it is in that version), unfortunately is rudimentary & still requires continuous care. Basically, if you delete 4 posts from a user, that user will be blocked for about a week. If you're getting slammed from the same IP address it's great, if you're getting 1 or 2 a day from various IP addresses, it's not as good. Also, you shouldn't really use it editorially as you: a) won't be able to undelete posts once you hit the 4 post point as they'll be hidden from even you. b) they won't be able to post for a week or so, so you won't even know they're attempting to communicate with you and you won't be able to reverse the decision easily.o I ultimately gave up on FruitShow on my site since I wasn't checking it all that often & it got filled with spam. I use Phorum with the Spam Hurdles module. I've had to tweak the forum a bit to get it to work the way I wanted it & I still haven't made the modifications again after a recent upgrade, but thanks to Spam Hurdles I get no spam & enough legitimate posts to believe that anyone who wants to post can. http://www.marktaw.com/forum/list.php?1 to see it in action. Hey Ted, I never did receive your emails! As mentioned above, I am on Vacation right now. I will try and get a quick release out (should be easy enough) when I get back. Thanks Mark and Wayne. I had setup Bad-Behavior in a more complicated way, I'll change this as suggested.
I'd love to move to a more recent version, especially if it has better Spam protection. Wayne, my email is Ted_Graham@yahoo.com, I hope to hear from you after your vacation. I was thinking about it on the way in this morning, what if any post that has more than 2 links requires filling in a captcha after pressing submit? Seems it would eliminate most spam, while rarely bothering legitimate users. If I knew Php, I'd be happy to submit this change, but I'm a .NET guy. |
