Mostly done to keep it away from microsoft.
Microsoft is failing in search.
In the year to March 07, Google search share has gone up to 64% from 58%. yahoo, microsoft, and ask are all down.
Microsoft to buy yahoo to stay in this?

Point being google has spent 3 billion to keep it away from microsoft. they could shut it down tomorrow. mission accomplished.

Buying doubleclick and shutting it down would certainly help bolster their "do no evil" message...
