a whirlwind of 80s nostalgia this weekend
Since there's a storm of Biblical proportions going through the Northeast right now (and most of yesterday), we sat and watched movies inside for a good portion of the day. We got a bunch of 80s era movie candy (the stuff you can still get) and watched Short Circuit and Flight of the Navigator back to back with our 8 year old.
Man, they don't make movies like that anymore. Even though they're cutesy kid flicks, there's adult language, complex plot elements, and real technology intermingled with the fantasy.
Now it's explosions and bright colors and 3D effects.
Stupid dumbing down of America.
Also, the storm is fucking up my WAN connection to two other hospitals and making my morning a pain in the ass. The pond behind my house has risen 2 feet so far. It has another 3 to go before it overflows its banks.

Oh it's not cold. It's just raining two inches an hour.
The wind woke up the puppy last night at 1:30, and he was inconsolable until I took him out for a walk in the horizontal rain, then he quieted down and went right to sleep, the little shit.

Of course, then *I* was up until 4, then snoozed until 5 when I got up to come to work.
I'm going on about 2.5 hours' sleep. I expect to crash right after lunch, give or take.

Can't argue with this.
Hey, did you see last night's episode of "Oww, my Balls!!" ? Best one evar.

Fuck. We could do with any rain at all. Send it right here.
Earnestly watching the possible hatching of La Niña. C'mon Huey.

You're getting old.
There are plenty of great movies being made.
Just saw Zathura on the weekend...again...(my daughter absolutely loves that movie, even if the robot scenes are rather gruesome). Great movie ("You know how Dad said we have to grow up? Well, this is what it looks like."..ha! I love that).
You're just reminiscing that your childhood was the golden era of enlightenment, selectively picking the best of a storm of shitty creations and imagining that it was the norm.

As an aside, wrestling and glam rock were both ___HUGE___ in the 80s.

Another thumbs-up for Zathura.
"We're ok, 'cause they only eat meat!"
"Dude, you're meat"
Yes, it's the same concept as Jumanji. But Jumanji was good, too.

I actually thought that show was one of the few entertaining parts of the movie.
Clearly, I am part of the problem. I promise not to breed.

Same author as Jumanji, actually.
I preferred Zathura -- Jumanji went on WAY too long, and got WAY too dangerous.
Not that Zathura wasn't dangerous. The robot, and the 'resource eaters', were all pretty scary.

Strangely Zathura got mostly bad reviews, and was a bit of a box office dud. I think it is grossly underrated, and has a high re-watchability (important for things your kids like to watch).

Muppet, go snag Second Hand Lions. Great movie. Also managed a PG or G rating. Not a computer-generated special effect in sight. I don't think they even blew anything up.

The part I liked was when he went to the hospital, and the clerk had a big board of buttons with icons for stuff like "shot in head", "having a baby", "vomiting", etc. Instead of St. God's Hospital, they should have called it St. Illiterate's Hospital
