Wimbledon. Sharkfish's influence on me is worrying.

Just watched one of the best games on a grass court. Fantastic match between Federer and Nadal, with Federer equalising Bjorn Borg's record of 5 straight Wimbledon Championships. The only negative comment is Sharky influenced. I kept thinking "this is the whitest crowd I've ever seen". That is something I have never thought about in the 100's of spectator sports I've watched.

yesterday Venus quipped to the Queen and Billie Jean King .. "Yeah Billie Jean was a great inspiration. It's great, and the prize money is the same as for white people."

Well, then tell her that's England.  The Northern Hemisphere.  People are White there.  It's an exciting new development.

BTW, exactly how much is getting erased over there, in general?  (I think Shark can erase, BTW).  That's one nice feature that isn't on this fruitshow - only mods can erase on these boards.

I don't believe there has ever been slavery in England.  They probably won't even get/know how to take that comment.

"I don't believe there has ever been slavery in England."

The slave trade was not abolished in the British Empire until 1807, and slavery itself was not abolished until 1833.

I'm sure the Queen knows her history better than you do.

huh?

In SW18 there aren't to many non-whites down that way and the tennis thing is very middle/upper class anyway.

The final day at Wimbeldon costs £££££

Maybe she is talking about S. Africa in the 70's or something, who knows.

That's the British empire, so Indians enslaving Indians would qualify.  I mean in England, the tournament is in England.

Are you guys doing something I don't know about?  Separate restrooms, restaurants, seating at plays, and drinking fountains? not last time I was there.  Did they ever have that?

That comment was in response to your "Well, then tell her that's England." comment.

England has all types of people.

Yes we used to treat the blacks like that and after them the irish, obviously we weren't like the US we are a bit more civil

....  Williams boosted her bank balance by a cool £700,000 ($1.41 million) after winning her fourth title at the All England Club but rather than the amount itself, she was delighted that women competitors had finally won the battle for equal pay.

"Of course now we have equal prize money. Billie Jean King fought for years and no one deserves this more than her," Williams told the Centre Court crowd as she clutched the Venus Rosewater Dish.

you guys are hilarious.  :-P

yeah, it says in the Wimbledon contract ... "if you're black you get a lower prize amount". yeah, right.

what matters it that there aren't many blacks in the seats, if Venus wins the big Kahuna? unless she's just a plebian gladiator for the patricians.

My ancestors left Northern England over religious differences back in maybe the early 1700's.  I kind of think that anyone with a spine and a different view may have decided to leave England.

Who cares how much women make in sports?  I was enmeshed in tennis for three straight years and wanted to be a pro player some day (I was nowhere near good enough).  It's one in a million, so to speak.  Pro athletes are almost "statistically" freaks by definition.

It doesn't take too much of watching "Pros vs. Joes" to find out what a huge gap there is.

But women only have to play 3 sets. Why should they earn the same?

"I don't believe there has ever been slavery in England.  They probably won't even get/know how to take that comment."

There are streets in Bristol called Whiteladies Road and Blackboy Road, to this day. It was a major slave trade port.

And there are loads of black people all over London, especially south.

That's right, make them play 5 sets.  What kind of match is only 3 sets?  That's like a big reason why I knew I could never touch pro.  To serve for 5 sets and be fresh to do it again a day or two later - they don't even do that in baseball.  My right shoulder got pretty eaten up, feeling, from all the practice serves I did.  For many years afterward, it felt like the shoulder had paid a price.

Yeah, I would think the UK is very white, but not nearly as white as say, Denmark/Norway/Sweden etc.

I think that since tennis is upper-class, brown people in the US and UK are not introduced to it early enough in life to weed in the talent.

Watch Freedom Writers starring Hilary Swank for a decent treatment of class in America without ever mentioning the word "class".  The film was not so preachy as I thought it would be and it rings true to my personal experience as an honors student in a good school system.  I have had nearly the exact conversation and reaction that the honors girl had in the film.
