http://www.themaccabees.co.uk/gallery/Photos%20By%20Fans/139.jpg BTW I love the Maccabees. Chicks doing the thumbs up pose always remind me of Lynndie England.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AG-10.jpg Wow that image has it's very own highly particular copyright notice:
"This image is in the public domain because it is ineligible for copyright. This applies worldwide. Pictures taken by U.S. military personnel on duty are ineligible for copyright, unless the photographer successfully claims that the photographs were not taken as part of his or her official duties. The photographers of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse photos have not made this claim, and have in fact denied it under oath." Dumbass me forgot who Lyndie England was, and I had to go click on that link (also didn't pay attention to the link itself, just saw it was blue and clicked). That image is not going to improve my day.
Anything created by the US government should not be copyrightable or trademarkable. Any patents received should only be defensive and automatically in the public domain.
Sadly, I seem to be in the minority on this. I believe that's how NASA's technologies are -- NASA controls them, but they are mostly in the public domain. Except for certain very specific protocols that allow you to command a satellite (for instance) -- those are VERY heavily protected. As you'd imagine they would be.
