Oh, here's one, sort of:
2. Rome, near the Vatican, in the area immediately _south_ of St. Peter's. I don't think Rome is off the beaten path, but if you wanted a quiet, nice area in Rome to stay, this is ideal. It's mostly residential, with some shops on the streets closest to St. Peter's. There's a GS grocery store a short walk, there's a small train station....

To me, a list is disrespectful. It trivializes the place and experience. It is wrong in the same way that a list of "Five women I'd like to fuck again" is wrong.
