See, 8 year olds are above such problems.  When my daughter wakes up crying, I just shake a ball bat at her and tell her that if she doesn't quit I'll GIVE her something to cry about.

Works amazingly well.  Very reliable.

just this morning I threatened to nail my eldest to the ceiling by her elbows if she didn't stop trying to pinch apples from the table and she merely giggled and then pestered me for the next 15 minutes trying to make it happen.
