Sanding our assholes with 150 grit.

items vs. itemList

"My personal favorite: Don't use plurals for variable names (collective nouns are okay)."

Ok. Well said. I'm changing from items to itemList.

Any other tips to share? Little things you do when writing the code to keep yourself sane?

Open {  and } close the block THEN edit the middle bit.

how often do people compile? I compile ten times a day and love working in eclipse with it's incremental compiler.

Where'd you get the first quote.  I use plurals for variable names (even "items" exactly) -- I don't see the advantage of "itemList" over "items".  I stopped pluralizing table names a while back, though, and it does have some advantages.

some post. search. I'm not really interested in one of those boring ass programer religious arguments. thanks.

I was hoping to collect little tips -- naming conventions, development practice, library maintaince, documentation.  People can evalulate on their own.

"some post. search."

Where?  Here?  JOS?  Reddit?  Digg?  Should I just google for it and hope I can find it.

"I was hoping to collect little tips -- naming conventions, development practice, library maintaince, documentation. People can evalulate on their own."

THAT's boring.  The internet is full to bursting with *conflicting* naming conventions, development practices, etc.  This, "don't use plurals for variable names" is a pretty useless tip without any explanation for it!  How is different from me saying staying "start every variable with the prefix 'var'".  It's pointless without some justification.

item & items starts looking the same. item and itemList looks different. Also easier to search for lists if for some reason you need to do that.

nurn

Where is this used?

I'd use "Items" for a "Collection", "ItemArray" for an array of items, "ItemList" for some linear list of items, "ItemDict" for a "dictionary" (aka "perl hash").

the nice thing in perl is you can see what kind of object it is from the syntax. the much maligned $@% stuff actually helps readability when you're used to it.

nurn should be a word but it is not. suggestions for a meaning?

fuck you Wayne.  It's not useless.  Any dumb shit could come up with a justification. Look PE did it.  The point of this thread, which you, ASSHOLE, have totally derailed, was to collect some tricks of the trade.

The little things that you do just because you think they help.  It's a game of inches.

"The little things that you do just because you think they help."

One persons help is another persons hinder..  just look at Hungarian notation.

"Any dumb shit could come up with a justification. Look PE did it."

Yeah, and that was actually useful!

Uh. Yeah. Thus "People can evalulate on their own."  Are you really this stupid?

Great. Now if you weren't an asshole and a moron we might have a thread collecting dozens of these things for those of us who aren't so fucking dumb we need our reasoning spoon fed to us.  Wayne, you suck.

I like that definition of "to nurn".  Makes sense, and we need a nice short word for that.

"Thus 'People can evalulate on their own.'"

How are they supposed to evaluate on their own without any fucking explanation of why it's a good thing.  You OP is stupid:

"Don't use plurals for variable names"
"Well said"

It isn't fucking "well said".  An decent explanation of why that's a good idea would be "well said".

"Now if you weren't an asshole and a moron we might have a thread collecting dozens of these things"

Your OP sucked and that's why this isn't the thread you want.  If you started out with something good, maybe it would have become what you wanted.  Don't blame me because you can't compose a good topic, with a fucking link, and some explanation, that people would rather contribute to than shit on.  As it stands, it's as much crap as any of my replies.

You want quality replies, produce quality topics.  And don't be an ass when someone asks for a link for a quote.
