The idea that Europe is being "taken over" by Muslims is the unifying theme of this cruise. Some people go on singles cruises. Some go on ballroom dancing cruises. This is the "The Muslims Are Coming" cruise - drinks included. Because everyone thinks it. Everyone knows it. Everyone dreams it.

A fascinating journey through the minds of people I could barely count as people. There's no love, no kindness, no joy. Nothing I would recognize as people I would like to build a country with.

Mark Steyn -- who was mentioned in the very next sentence -- is a brilliant man and an excellent writer (he got his footings with the National Post). I don't always agree with what he says, but it is denial to exclude considering the things he says, regardless of how PC they may be.

And *yes*, it is denial to discount the idea that "the Muslims are taking over". If a certain demographic has a *much* higher birthrate, and you're in a democratic country, then you're just fooling yourself if you exclude the possibility of considering it.

Perhaps you didn't notice, but they don't just hate muslims, they hate everyone else. They would execute me too. There's no war that they didn't want to keep fighting or bomb they wouldn't drop if a strong executive told them too.

Yes, if you selectively pick the worst quotes from the worst examples, aggregate them and then apply them against an entire group of people that share a political lean, you have a nice "they" to vilify.

I watch Fox News and don't have these opinions.  I also love reddit and hang out here, go figure.

Generalizations about people don't work really well.

I believe there are conservatives that vote democratic.  Liberals that vote republican.  Liberals that watch and come on Fox News (Jon Stewart, Colbert).

By and large, people are people.

This is where I call foul.  I get home about 7EST.  I hate regular TV and only watch news.  I normally catch CNN during weekend and Fox News when I get home for about 2 hours.  I wish I had MSNBC, but I dont get it.

I come home, turn on the TV and there is a news ticker at the bottom to give me a headline of what went on during the day.  Sometimes a pretty Fox News anchor to say thing.  Fox News may be bias and all of that, propaganda machine, but you can still watch it and then take the sound bites and research yourself.  It isn't like you turn it on and then all of the sudden you become a zombie and spout out, "I love Bush, I love Bush".

Reddit is crazy, a little funny.  The same thing as Fox but on the other side.  I guess worst of both worlds.

There's no content on TV news. In half an hour you get five random headlines. Each headline is followed by a stupid person saying the first thing that comes to their mind.

Sometimes a group of scream at each other. They generally scream the first thing that comes to their mind.

There is no depth. It's vapid. It is even more retarded than USA Today. You would get more information in five minutes of reading the Drudge Report or Wikipedia's current events.

But don't be self conscious about it. I'm sure it fills some need.

The first urge is to respond defensively and to say why I have an idea, but it wouldn't matter. It's critical for your psyche to justify your incredible authoritarian impulse in some manner. So you pick someone has to do the dirty work. Or they are out to get us. Or whatever. You would find some reason no matter what.

There is no content on American Idol or 24.  TV news has a "little" bit on content.  It is hard to get the sport scores or weather or fires in California from an episode of Hell's Kitchen.

Gosh, you might want to find where I've supported the Iraq war.

I hope you realize that "conservatism" doesn't mean support for the Iraq war, just as liberalism doesn't mean opposition to it. The whole "nation building" exercise is pretty much contrary to conservatism.

http://www.pollingreport.com/iraq.htm

BTW: You might want to talk to some of your liberal friends. Seems that early on you weren't as against the Iraq war. You might want to talk to many of your democratic representatives that basically handed the bush administration a blank check for years, allowing Bush to do whatever he wanted with their blessing. Convenient now that it's such a complete fuck up to disengage and pretend that it was someone else's mistake.

>Stupid stupid stupid.

By actual political lean I'm a moderate to left leaning libertarian, but I actually enjoy the fun of being labeled a conservative (it's even more enjoyable when I'm called a "neocon". I think that is awesome).

gd, I get into this all the time with reddit people.

Try this experiment.

You turn on a news channel.  The person on the news says that there is a new Prime Minister in South Korea.

Now before turning on the news channel and hearing that you didn't know that information. After watching, now you know about the new Prime Minister in South Korea.  That is called news?

They didn't have a majority, but they could have made a hell of a lot more noise than they did, setting a record that they can now point back at with pride. Instead they rode the fence, so to speak, supporting something they now claim they didn't support. It's cowardly politics.

I think I like the speeak softly, but carry a big stick theology a little better. It would have made absolutely zero difference how loudly they screamed since Bush had a rubber stamp on the hill.

It would only have served to create new enemies and make the ones already there more fierce. This, in addition to whatever impact there is on an armed force sent to do something it seems half its people will hate them for.

Yes, Bot, you'd get the headline. And then bum fight.  No meaningful analysis or context would be given. At best, there'd be two fighting cocks in a bloody feathery battle to the death, with vapid talking points taped to their chest.

That's what I mean when I say bumfight with headlines.

Also, don't think that getting news from two shallow extremist sources averages out to an informed center. With that strategy you will end up with nothing except a smug feeling of sophisticated intelligence.

Like you do after watching a cock fight.

That's the sort of government system that edges towards extremism because it's easier to tow the line than to contradict the official line.

I'd prefer a loud, adversarial system.

And if 50%-1 of the population hated the military for the venture, it should be open and honest. None of this bullshit "we're for it but we retain the right to be against it if it turns out badly".
Permalink DF
July 17th, 2007 2:47pm
In their 'support' they were also given a very convenient but patently false out in the form of WMDs.

I think loud and adversarial would be wonderful if any action, expression, or speaking would cause any change.

The way we function now is so adversarial that there is no discussion. It can be summed up as 'we have the power, so we are doing this'. There is no meaningful discourse or discussion. The decisions are made before anyone ever gets up to take the podium.
