The new girl at work is so pale and keen-featured she could almost pass for white.  I refuse to get near the topic, but I imagine that if I identified her as a black person, we would have to have "that discussion"--the one where many really light-skinned blacks or mixed people like Tiger Woods gives me a lecture on identity. 

And I would laugh because I would say to her "you know, white folks think you're black, and they run the country. So while I'm glad you took the time to think it through, and have exposed your obvious intelligence, it really doesn't matter."

And then she would never go out to lunch with me again.

It is interesting.  Even Tiger Woods who lets just say is mixed acts kind white/asian? (eg, Swedish model wife) isn't even considered white or asian?

Once again, people are dumb.

I would love to see equivalent studies carried out in Africa, where whites are in the minority. In much of Africa there is a cultural emphasis on respect for elders and parents, the need for hard work, and the obligation to study hard and do well at school. Whereas the white minorities might (?) perhaps feel a sense of entitlement and less pressure to work hard. How do grades compare in that environment?

South Africa has a brilliant solution to this dilemma. Anyone who is not all black or all white is simply called "coloured". See? Identity crisis solved hehe.

Heh. I saw a programme on TV a while ago and someone was being arrested, cautioned, or something. Apparently for "statistical purposes" they have to be asked what they think their race is. I suspect the stats are going to be ruined by a lot of people doing what the young man did in the programme, he simply took the piss and said he was "white" when in fact he was clearly black or mixed race (which were two of the options). Good. I always refuse to fill that part of forms in.

The problem I have with phrases like "African American" and "Asian American" is that they don't sound so catchy when you replace the "American" part.

Yeah, but have you noticed that there's no checkboxes for 'slant' or 'darky' on those forms?  So you're kinda stuck with the stupid terms.
