google should buy yahoo?
MONEY IS MADE ON SEARCH ADVERTISING. All this other stuff is a complete diversion. In that realm google is winning and should let yahoo alone.
In business, people often assume that you can combine A and B (or G and Y), and you don't loss anything, and even gain stuff by supposed synergies. But it rarely turns out this way in reality, because hidden beneath the surface are a hundred subtle dependencies for A and B (or G and y), which when you try to combine them, get disrupted.
Maybe it is just impossible to neatly combine search and non-search functions - I think that was the true lesson of Google's original success (which they are now in danger of forgetting).
When Google first emerged, one of the reason that they were beautiful for search was that they were clean and simple, and all the other crap that you saw on portal sites was hidden away or absent.
Even today, google.com is much cleaner than yahoo.com. And that is why Google wins on search.
Conversely, Yahoo is full of other stuff (I call it crap, as most of it is of no interest to me), and hence is not so good at search, but is better than google at this other stuff.
Perhaps the lesson is:
If you want to be good at search, concentrate on search, don't add lots of crap.
If you want to be good at other stuff, add lots of other stuff, but be aware that it weakesn your search.
"Even today, google.com is much cleaner than yahoo.com. And that is why Google wins on search."
Google wins in search because it has a cleaner webpage? Isn't it google had a better algorithm and now has a dominate share of searches using google by habit?
Cleaner web page is part of it. Don't forget it isn't just the search form, but the results page too.
Results quality is also part of it. But to be honest, I'm not sure that Google's results are that much better than Yahoo's: Google results are nowadays pretty full of spammy adsense sites - that's a constant moan on many forum discussions about google.
The key thing is google is _perceived_ to be better at search, for a whole combination. Many of which are subtlely tied in to not being a mega portal full of crap and ads.
