The drunk employee story seems more plausible.

The very essence of these data centres is that they remain humming even if the power grid goes offline.

Followup stories on /. suggested that the problem was a major power outage, rather than a drunk.  I wonder if maybe the drunk jumped into the transformer and caused the power outage?
