Oops, 7 Days. Hey look I don't update on weekends.

Facebook... does PHP scale well?

Facebook seems a bit slow. PHP's performance benchmarks as a language are a bit dismal, but I'm not sure that's what makes facebook crawl.

Has facebook just grown too fast for it's hardware or is it the DB or what? Does anyone know what database facebook is using?

dont worry about it, php scales fine.  if you ever reach the point where you have as many users as facebook I can guarantee you that your site will crawl as well...regardless of what language you use...until you find and remove the bottlenecks.

Yes I wish I had a 30 million user problem. The CEO of facebook is about 12 years old, the little bastard.

Actually some company is suing facebook claiming he stole their idea.

WTF are Americans so litigious?

dont think of it as being litigious.  think of it as purchasing lottery tickets.

and remember: you have to be in to win...

did you consider the possibility that he stole the idea?

sure, he almost certainly did.  who cares?  I steal peoples ideas all the time.

right now Im working on a workflow application...the idea for that came from elsewhere, a java game framework...Im using nothing but tried and tested ideas there...and some personal applications, every one of which I stole the idea for from earlier, stupider implementations.

the question is whether or not he stole the _actual code_

and I doubt he did.

"Does it scale?" is too broad a question to ask. Does it scale how? To number of users? Impressions? Concurrent connections?

Facebook scales okay, because they have a lot of static pages served up and memcache the hell out of it.

I wonder who that guy is who always lambasts me for "making shit up".

I'm glad he's there though. There's no point in telling the truth if it doesn't get somebody's nerves.
