"Iran is trying to be smart and build nuke plants for this
inevitability. If I were them, I would fight the US to the death over this issue since when the oil stops, the US will have NO military power at all. Jets won't fly and the only ships that will be usable will be nuclear powered, and those are not real good for maneuvering in combat."
I entirely agree with PE, I think Iran genuinely wants power plants.
possibly they also want nuclear weapons, but who can blame them?
we cannot reasonably stop them from creating nuclear power plants, they have every right and they have every need for them.

the oil stops for Iran before it stops for the US. Iran is running out of time more than oil. In 20 years who will feed the hoards of angry 40 year olds? No one. They will destroy the clerics with their fists. First middle aged revolution evah.
"the oil stops for Iran before it stops for the US"
Iran is a primitive, impoverished third world country. They will do fine when the oil runs out. But the Americans will starve. This will lead to rioting as the cities are burned to the ground.

hey, they could have joined the second world had they aborted millions of male fetuses 20 years ago.
let's face it. more than oil, hot, unsatisfied Persian women would have caused the Russians to invade.
That's ... weird.
Iran is not your other middle east countries. There are smart people there and people have jobs. They could do well, and may do well again someday. Their current president does not have any good plan though and may ruin things for everyone. The last president was a really cool guy.

the kids are not all right. they've been promised the world. not just the first or second.
Bloggingheads interview with Reza Aslan:

(wm version doesn't for some reason work for me, real player does.)
Aslan argues that if the US would leave Iran alone, they'd get rid of the regime in no time.
The interview was done shortly after the Hamas/Fatah Gaza fighting, some good insights to that as well.
Well worth watching.

I love Reza Aslan. She can read Lolita to me any night of the week.
Sadly, "Fight to the death" seems to be Bush's plan for Iran. Now, why would Iran want to play directly into Bush's plans?

They too need an outside threat to stay in power.
