Sanding our assholes with 150 grit. Slowly. Lovingly.

I would also like

to go on one of those crab fishing boats like on Deadliest Catch.

I would only want to work on one for about two weeks. But I could handle that. And I would do it for just whatever it cost them to feed/shelter me for the duration and a whole bunch of crab to take home with me.

I like occasionally doing extreme physically challenging stuff.

Not suicidal man, just a softy programmer with a hardcore inside.

"I like occasionally doing extreme physically challenging stuff"

good idea.  hey listen, if that crab thing doesn't work out I would be willing to feed you in exchange for your labour...I have a number of straw cottages that need to be built....it would be perfect, there is nowhere to sleep so you would be in a tent, its winter so its wet, cold and miserable, the building sites are sloppy with mud and water and you cant leet the straw bales get wet.

what do you say?

...you could shear some sheep as well....

You feeding some decent chow?

Like I say, two-week max probably, and I'd debate the usefulness of straw cottages anywhere there is snow.

Also, I need something out of it... I mean, the drying of towels just shows that I am like a supernatural monkly force and I think that is enough. It's also only like a one or two day commitment, and the crabs, are well, man, crabs taste great.

<g> give me your labour and I will smother you in lamb chops and pork roasts.

no snow, its not quite high enough for that, just lots and lots of rain and mud.

"Also, I need something out of it..."

a holiday in a new zealand straw cottage in the middle of nowhere whenever you want one?

...actually, I suspect Im mostly bluffing, but it is a _Really_ interesting idea...

Well it does sound like the sort of nasty, gruff, rough conditions I think toughen the soul and make you stronger.

Maybe some sort of share in the equity of the future visitors staying in said cottages?

I think I am actually going to try the towel drying thing.

My mom's has a fenced in back yard so nobody will know that I'm nuts. I could do it there once it gets real cold again.

hmm...the equity could possibly be discussed, but it would probably require more than mere labour on your part....

actually the renting the cottages to others is kind of the idea, but Im not convinced at this point that it will work so my backup plan is to pretend I just want them as a place for visitors and family to stay in.

it really is just...mildly interesting...farmland...with a waterfall, some native bush and some hills...and its surrounded by more farmland, so its biggest selling will be "REALLY remote.  so remote that not even your kids will be able to contact you."

the beach is maybe 30-45 minutes drive away, and there is room and bush for pig and deer hunting on the neighbouring farms if you are on good terms with the farmers....but really the prime activity offered is sitting in the grass and reading beside the waterfall...

my ideal is maybe 5 cottages spaced about the land, each with a wee yard surrounded by a hedge and possibly a 6th building somewhere in the middle designed to act as a kind of townhall, with a giant fireplace or two, full kitchen and bathroom facilities and so forth.

..so everything is going to have to be built pretty cheaply, Im hoping to base them on this design:

ahh, its good to have dreams...

No thanks!
Not if it involves weeks of continual sea-sickness.

Bah ice trucking is pansy stuff. You're in a heated cab driving a truck. Just because it is over perilous frozen roads just makes you an idiot, not a tough guy.

The problem comes when you can't be in the truck ALL the time.  Like when the truck slides off the road.  Or the truck breaks down.

THEN it helps to be able to bench-press 150 pounds or so.  Because you might need that strength to manage the chain that the NEXT truck will have to use to pull you back onto the road.
