You cannot limit read access (I don't think). Write access can be limited. I've never hosted a project on sourceforge but I have contributed to one or two in a limited fashion.

what exactly is the point of all this 'sharing'? I understand it's the code for the site (and that's about it) but I'm just not getting the why part of it?

I don't know if universal read access is a great idea yet. :)

You'll need a gatekeeper regardless of where you host it, but sourceforge isn't a bad place to put it.
On Sourceforge you can't have a gatekeeper on reads, and that's what I worry about.
We may not get patches out quick enough to take care of the griefers.

I've got a CVS running on my site now -- it's a bit rough and ready (I think I've changed something significant in the original framework I cannibalised, but it works), and as I can restrict access it solves the patching speed problem. :)
