Nobody likes to be called a dummy by a dummy.

Some white guy is on CN right now crying on the phone

that he's afraid of going outside because people are looting the pharmacy and the grocery store outside his home for food and medicine.

"This lawless violence has me terrified," he says. Meanwhile he denied that he has seen any weapons or heard any gunshots. He's just afraid because black people are taking food.

I wonder why white people are afraid of black people.

Er, I thought the looters (regardless of skin color) were grabbing guns as well?

Heh, I love the idea expressed elsewhere on this board that the best way to deal with this is to get more people with guns running around "defending" themselves from anyone who frightens them.

If there was some way to keep the guns in the hands of moderately sane people and avoid looters and racists running around enjoying the fact that the cops are a bit busy then it would all be good.  ;)

All in all, if there's as much looting and killing going on as people seem to think, I'm not sure if the idea of martial law in the area is the worst possible plan. And that really depresses me because I thought we were a sentient and civilised species.

Who was it who said that civilisation is 3 meals away from revolution? (Or soemthing like that. Apparantly we're definately one hurricane away from being vicous animals who'll happily kill anything we're afraid of, anyway.)

"I wonder why white people are afraid of black people."

I guess this is a troll, but I'll bite.

After watching the Rodney King riots on TV where they showed black people dragging a white guy out of his truck and beating him nearly to death, I tend to avoid riot zones when possible.

On the looting issue, regardless of skin color or station, I think that when police are trying to rescue people in a disaster and looters and nuts are running around destroying things and shooting people, the governor MUST declare martial law and implement both a 24 hour curfew and 'a looters will be shot on sight' policy. It's not acceptable to be acting crazy when people are being rescued. All those people should have either left town or gone to the stadium. I think the governor, the mayor of nola and the authorities are doing a bad job. They have no plan. People should have been ordered out of the city and evacuated as soon as it became clear the hurricane was headed there. Martial law should have been declared before the hurricane hit.

Well, Rich Rogers, that also explains why blacks are afraid of police---lots of folks have seen videotape of blacks being beaten silly by cops.

Fear. Loathing. Prejudice. Why don't we all just fucking kill everyone and each other and get it over with.

Yeah. Because white people in groups have *never* done anything crazy. Really.

I agree completely. Not just on TV but real life too. There is definitely crazy stuff going on. If a Presbyterian steals your wallet, you will never hold that against Presbyterians because you had no idea he was one. But if somebody from a different race steals your wallet, well that seems like an easy explanation for most people unless they are trained to resist it.

Philo, OBVIOUSLY white people do crazy stuff too, but folllowing the media, usually as a 'crazed loner', and not in groups. Reading the news, I see that Arabs do their crazy stuff in small organized groups known as 'cells'. Hm, I can't think of any crazy Chinese stuff. Maybe they are the only sane ones.

I've heard dissidents argue that historically, people in the US have tended to be more afraid than most people, of just about anything. Crime, Cubans, Iraqis, aliens, you name it.

I haven't the foggiest idea whether it's true.

I mean, to put that in context, politicians and others seeking power might prey upon this latent fear and exploit it for their ends. So we saw it after 9-11, we see it justified for repression against blacks, etc.

Supposedly our crime levels aren't that out-of-the-world, maybe a bit on the high end, but we live in far greater fear of it.

Again, I really don't know whether it's true or where in our history this comes from.

mmm...from the reports I've seen on the BBC
(i) the looters aren't all black
(ii) it's not just food - I'm not entirely sure ow stealing a set of shelves is justified;-)

I wouldn't be overly keen about wondering about amongst looter whatever their colour. One question - did the guy hiding raise the issue of race or is this being (rightly or wrongly) projected onto him?

And I see that Americans do their crazy stuff in large organized groups known as 'armies'.

The more I read my own posts the more I read my own posts the more I think I shouldn't post from home. My typing when half asleep is worse than ever.

Anyway, question stands - Who brought up the issue of race - white guy crying on the phone or us. It may be that looters' race is an issue for him - but if he didn't actually mention it then this thread says more about us than about him.

White guy crying on the phone said they're all blacks. "These people are not my neighbors" he said.

Fair enough - then I've no sympathy with the bastard. Well - little sympathy. (I wouldn't be keen on going out in a crowd of looters, whatever colour they were).
