Good question. There is a bit of jockeying for position going on right now, and during the struggle we might find outselves under just as uncaring of a dictator. This does needs to be resolved before people start committing.

There was never any poll taken or anything, but peronsally I prefer this for two reasons.  One, the domain name is in some small way a tribute to Chris, and two, it's an almost perfect replica of ?off and I'm too old to cope with change. :)

Totally agree Mat. I greatly appreciate Simon's efforts, but this is just far more transparent and easy of a transition for people. Hell, it runs a lot faster too, so it's really superior to Joel's shop. Wonderfully done.

I think it was more a case that in the last few hours John offered the url and AHA & mat to do the work.

BUT Ectopia was already in place and running albeit at about one post a month.  So we all headed there quick.  I think the first Simon knew about it was waking up this morning to live forum on his doorstep and a few emails along the lines of "did you know..."  Remember Simon, like me, is on GMT so it all kicked off late evening for us.

It was a little like waking up and finding a bomb had gone off across the pond.

I didn't intend to create a clone in the first place just somewhere with a similar low barrier to communication and as an alternative when the JOS servers appeared to be unstable.

It won't cost me anything more than my current hosting already does whether people use it or not.  Its there with its own idiosyncrasies.

I can't say as the crazy name gives me any kind of warm fuzzy feeling but people probably feel the same about ectopia.  All the varieties of Off Topic are taken though.

Ectopia reminds me of ectopic pregnancies, and those don't sound fun.  So I guess I prefer Crazy On Tap.  Less bad mental imagery.
