Mat Hall: "the only new people I've seen since Joel removed it from the "Other groups" list are Chris and that girl with the blog with the "mysterious" changing background."

Who's the girl in this quote?  I thought I read most threads that go through here, but a mysterious changing background rings no bells.

Anyone care to fill me in?

Some girl with a livejournal linked the background image for her journal Dennis Forbes' website.

Dennis Forbes had some girl on LiveJournal leech an image from his site for her background. Dennis changed it to something else and there was a thread here with a link to the blog in question, which brought the girl here via her referrer log.

OK look I need my mod powers back so that I can avoid this sort of thing.

LOL she still hasn't changed that image either.

We need to start a recruitment campaign, as war weariness is setting in. If we can't get more new faces in ?off, I'm afraid we'll have to resort to a draft.

Well - if the mods could nip over to the mainland, see who gets bajoomed for ?offness and invite them over, that might work.

Unfortunately any direct mention on the other boards and the thread dissappears so we'll have to resort to uncharacteristic subtlety.

Perhaps any time someone comes across an interesting link somewhere we should post a trackback...

I read this forum pretty regularly, but I keep my mouth shut. Most of the time I read four posts into a thread and think, "Well, what could you add to that?"

Reasoned argument is always worth adding to most threads. Other than that wittering aimlessly does just as well. I encourage you to witter in a personal way.

I was thinking more specifically about threads like "I just scratched my left nut". One can only wonder at what form reasoned argument would take in such a case...

Phaedo: I think I'll scratch my left nut.
Socrates: Do you feel that is fair and just?
P: Whatever do you mean?
S: Well, if in scratching your left nut, you make the right one jealous, would you then be inclined to scratch it as well?
P: I suppose I should be so inclined.
S: Well, what about my nuts? What if they get jealous?

I don't know where I'm going with this. I need to get back to work.

I wish JOS Idiot-B-Gone removed topics as well as posts.

oh c'mon "scratch my left nut" was a reasonably witty response to me threatening ball-by-ball coverage on the cricket thread.

So *that's* what that was...duh. I never read the cricket threads.

Me niether. I tried to make fun of them with the Ashes blah blah thing, and then they go make a freaking thread out of it. I'd torture them all with American football threads, but then I'd have to watch it.

Oh, um, it's me. That was yesterday's mock handle.

American Football threads wouldn't be that irritating a quick flurry for five seconds then a lot of hugging and thumping. I can understand how its taken as a metaphor for the average American's sexual behaviour.

Um, Simon, I'm not sure why you went there so fast. Must be something about our football that you get a rise out of. Is today "everything as a sexual metaphor" day? I remember that game from middle school, but I'm probably rusty at it now.

just found this board from a link on the main JOS board. why did they remove the link to it from Other Groups? there's some very thought-provoking discussions (ex. billiards).

"why did they remove the link to it from Other Groups?"

Oh, I'd guess the Powers That Be (hi, Joey) feel rather embarassed about this little experience gone awry, and all the strange creatures it spawned :)

Anyway, the sidebar says it all - "an obscure forum populated by nerds, ne'er do wells and morons..." (BTW, best sidebar so far). Not exactly the bunch you'd like to present the newcomers as "My Community", right?

He removed it becasue we were sucking the life from the main forum. It got to the point where any reference to ?off opn the main forum got you dissappeared.
