Or maybe he saved her life, and thereby should be considered a hero. He made her think that her plan of self-annihilation was underway, so she probably stopped pursuing other avenues of destruction, awaiting the hitman. That gave her time to learn to appreciate life, so really he charged the money to provide a philosophy lesson.

Yes, I'm surprised the defense didn't bring that argument. They could easily say he took her money and tried waiting until she got over her death wish.
