Religions: Framework vs. Library

Myself and a lot of my friends have no religion. I was raised mormon and found that the religion just did not fit me. Many parts of it were good for me, but the idea is either you believe and try to do everything as the church says, or you don't.

I didn't fit into the religion because I wanted to A) read and watch whatever the hell I want and B) enjoy certain pleasures such as alcoholic and caffienated beverages in moderation.

I do miss the prayer aspect, and the story of Jesus Christ, though. I also want to take the wisdom of other religions into my life.

I thought about joining a certain type of Lutheran church. But then I wondered if I could focus on what matters to me, instead of having to deal with all parts of their agendas.

Today I thought about the Library vs. Framework argument. Certain concepts of my birth religion worked well for me, but I found, try as I may, I couldn't have a happy life while fitting into the framework of the mormon church.

I've decided that for now I'm just going to appreciate what each religion has to offer, and use it like a library.

Can you think of any groups I could go to that would be comfortable with this approach?

I prefer to code my own libraries and frameworks.

"I thought about joining a certain type of Lutheran church."

Do it. "joining" is strong language, all you have to do is attend, try it out.

Personally, I look at Mormonism as an ethnicity, as in just stick to the bible and don't add that other book.

Watch out for that impersonal stuff too, like Buddhism.  It may be a valuable experience, but unless you want to spend your life sitting under a pagoda tree...

Framework vs. library? I'll take framework, what the hey.

Lutheran denominations are highly recommended, as they are the only ones I'm aware of where everybody thinks that any other creed is better/more exciting/beautiful etc.

Almost any mainstream protestant branch should fill that bill. Believe what you want, do what you want. Doesn't matter a whit to any of them. Abortion? No problem. Gay marriage? No problem. Sex outside marriage? No problem. Birth control? No problem. Divorce? All you can handle, bro.

Don't believe in the divinity of Jesus? No problem. Don't believe in miracles, the trinity, angels, etc.. etc.. no problem. Basically you can roll your own in almost all these churches. Even if you are at odds with one of their beliefs you'll never be called on it unless you try to change the organization.

Methodists, Lutherans (ELCA), Episcopals, Presbyterians. Any of those would be a good fit.
