Tax the wealthy. Problem solved.

Zone Alarm vs. Firefox (Me Too)

Works okay on my computer, but not my girlfriend's, even after an upgrade. Googling turns up this. Looks like she has one of the bad versions of Zone Alarm. AVG won't update either. At least if I shut down Zone Alarm, Firefox works. AVG still doesn't.

Thanks for the post. I'm still at ZA ver. 4.5.594 so no problem here with ZA and FF. Looks like I won't be upgrading my ZA anytime soon.

AVG just updated. :-) I guess I'll try un-installing, deleting, regediting, and letting her decide whether or not to install the new version.

I have the latest versions of all three and they work with mostly no problems...

The only problem is ZA "forgets" that I checked the little "do not ask again" box quite often so I have to say "yes", allow access.

I have version 5.5 of ZoneAlarm and Firefox and I hav eno problems. In fact, I've never had problems with all of the upgrades.

I think the key to the problem is:
"1. You install Firefox on a computer that has previously had Zone Alarm installed and then un-installed."

If you're not having a problem with FF and ZA it's likely you haven't followed the steps properly. :)

I've been running ZA (and AVG) on XP, with SP2, a lot longer than I've been running FF - I'm not having any issues at all. Seems some are though, the OP in the link doesn't think much of ZA at all, but then I think that's a common reaction to a scenario that causes you hours of research and grief to sort out.

I thought the key was "Not all versions of Zone Alarm have this problem - the current one ( 5.5.062.000) appears to be OK, and the one they were shipping three months ago was OK. In between then and now, there were at least two defective versions."

And that the bad version lingered even if you uninstalled it, which is why my upgrading it didn't fix the firefox problem.

Perhaps, I read it as "the defective versions of ZA actually had to have been uninstalled in order for the issue to arise". I may have read it wrong.

Ah. By "key" I meant "cause." Looks like by "key" you meant "solution."

FWIW, Firefox works just fine now with Zone Alarm. Looks like the upgrade fixed it without me having to uninstall anything.

MarkTAW,

Glad to hear it. They can be frustrating machines at time, but then this probably isn't news to you. We've always got MS to bash about it :)
