Oh c'mon! She was lying there, sleeping! On a plane! She obviously wanted it.

Colm -

It's a physical, emotional assault of a person's being, privacy, and sanctity. A physical assault like this is on the same scale as a murder. Murder is at the top end and something like this is probably about 1/10th of the way up with rape and assault with weapons somewhere in between.

Murder conveys a life sentence, generally, which you can argue to be about 70 years for a very healthy person. 7 years, or one tenth the sentence for murder, seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Undressing and fondling someone while they're sleeping on an airplane is excessive as well. He also attempted to flee the police.

Finally, you don't know what happened in court. He may have been belligerent and/or unrepentant.

Having said that, I sometimes wonder if proximity to the penal system deadens judges. When I watch Law & Order, I see some executive get offered a "deal" of two years in prison and it freaks me out. My family being without a husband and father for two years? Loss of the major source of income? Add in that simply having a felony conviction on one's record can make you nearly unemployable when you *do* get out...

Seven years is a lifetime. I think I agree that it's too much, even if he mouthed off to the judge.

Thats what wrong with this country, it rewards failure / laziness.

I think the seven years is reasonable since the guy has serious problems and needs a serious wake up call. 1-3 years would not be a big enough punishment. 4-7 all OK. More than that, no, but he should be a registered sex offender.

I once had my genitals groped while I was standing in a packed subway car in a foreign country. It was too crowded to see who it was, or even to escape. I did leave the car at the next station though even though that wasn't the station I wanted.

Interestingly, although I was upset about the incident, it didn't occur to me at the time to report it. I think partly since I was in a foreign country that was hostile to Americans and you never know what might happen. Also, I didn't know who did it so it would have been pointless anyway.

This is really, really bad. The US culture at least seems to have accepted that sending someone toa US prison (for whatever reason) includes anal rape as an accepble part of the punishment.

Do you really believe this is appropriate?

I think most people are resigned to the fact that that's what happens. It's a shame that some seem to think that it's perfectly all right that it happens and that the prisoners deserve it, but I don't think it's going to stop any time soon.

"What if he'd have been Polish?"

Since I don't speak Polish, just as I don't speak Russian, there would have been no discourse, just the same. A swift backhand would probably be my response.

...

But let me explore this further...

For some reason, Polish men despise black people. A good many Polish and Italians in Chicago are raised to hate brown people. Russians, on the other hand, approach me all the time.

The funny thing is, since I knew he was Russian, I did not feel compelled to go to authorities over the incident. I understood he was a wierdo, but my own prejudices and experiences led to my reaction. Russian men find me physically attractive, and I understand their perspective.

Had he been Polish, there IS the potential that I would have reacted differently, since in my experience Polish people have openly despised blacks since I can remember. My emotional reaction would have been more likely to have me report the guy.

But that is off the subject of this thread. Just something that is on my mind lately.
