All of the looters they are showing on CNN/MSNBC/FOX are of one race. Do you think other races are looting and they are just not showing footage of them?
Check BoingBoing -- they have a few samples of news reports of whities with the food they "found", and dem damned nigras with the food they "looted". But then seeing as 20% of you morons believe the sun orbits the earth I refused to be surprised by any stupidity or ignorance that the American populace display...
I think that lots of people are looting.
I think this post is a clear troll.
"Our" race. I suppose you're waiting to glean some keen psychological insight into the replies depending upon which race they assume is "ours".
Oh look Matty is already making assumptions.
It appears that a poll suggests 20% of Americans are certified idiots, which only serves to reinforce the view that the rest of the world holds about you. You (in the sens of Americans, not in the sense of any one individual, before anyone starts a semantics-based falemwar) voted Bush in for a second term, so I'd hazard a guess that the majority of Americans are retarded in some significant fashion. The fact that people want ID taught as science, that a significant number believe that God created humans in their present form at some (astronomically) recent point in the past, etc., only adds weight to the assessment that there's some sort of brain deficiency on the go.
Sure, I've met a lot of well-educated and sensible *individual* Americans, but as a race you're somewhat embarassing to everyone else...
Ignore the typos -- there was an open bar at a leaving do over lunch, and I'm pissed as the proverbial.
"Check BoingBoing -- they have a few samples of news reports of whities with the food they 'found'"
Right, but I would guess the average person is getting their news from TV, and from what I've seen on the 3 news networks, looting is being done by one race. Just what are the networks up to?
It is entirely possible. For instance socio-economic factors:
-Which group is most likely to still be stuck in the city? The poor. The affluent already hopped in their car and are long gone.
-Which group has the most lifestyle gain from a couple of small things stolen from a retailer? The poor.
So the poor are most likely to be looters in this situation. If the poor of New Orleans are disproportionally black (or even proportionally if New Orleans is largely people-of-colour city, as the saying goes. I don't know the demographics of that town), well then you're going to have primarily black looters.
Dennis sez : "Which group is most likely to still be stuck in the city? The poor. The affluent already hopped in their car and are long gone."
This is a good point, and something that the news media hasn't touched on, as far as I've seen. The fact is, the mass evacuation plan seems to have been predicated on the notion that you must have a car to evacuate ... which tends to rule out a lot of your lower-income residents. I didn't see any mention of buses being pressed into service, or National Guard trasports being used to ferry people out before the storm hit -- just lines and lines of private vehicles on the roads.
Initially, I thought all those people who "decided to stay" were just plain stupid, but then I realized ... maybe they didn't have a choice after all. Sure, it's nice to see people being rescued from rising floodwaters, but like I said before, couldn't there have been more preventative measures taken for people who didn't have any means of transportation in the first place?
Maybe I'm just watching all the wrong channels.
Everybody has to leave now.
Pretty grim. I have the greatest respect for the US Army Corps of Engineers and I hope they are given the task and budget priority to fix up that shoreline. It's going to need it.
Eskimos. There are just a ton of Eskimos descending like a plague of locusts upon the stores.
Ok, I made that up. My apologies to any Inuit folk reading this.

I think the term looting is being used out of context here, by the media.
These people aren't stealing stereos & TV's. They are taking food and water. I don't think we have the right to criticize them for this, legal or not.
Well reports I've heard were about people taking electronics, clothing, and jewellery.
"Everybody has to leave now.
Grim? From the article: "The Federal Emergency Management Agency was considering putting people on cruise ships..."
Lucky bums, I've *always* wanted to go on a cruise.
Very good point indeed, Snark. I noticed that as well.
I also noticed how it was interesting that there were not enough military resources to help the less fortunate evacuate to safety, yet as soon as these same "undesirables" became threats to business owners, good god man, send in the marines!!
Every time there's a natural disaster, it's funny how the government's reaction typically mirrors the socio-economic landscape...
>> looting is being done by one race
When black people do it, it is called "LOOTING."
When white people do it, it is called "FINDING."
When the police do it, it is called "SHOPPING."
Sample of white folk "finding"
Sample of cops looting:
"It must be legal," she said. "The police are here taking stuff, too."
"Looting broke out in some New Orleans neighborhoods, prompting authorities to send more than 70 additional officers and an armed personnel carrier into the city. One police officer was shot in the head by a looter but was expected to recover, authorities said.
A giant new Wal-Mart in New Orleans was looted, and the entire gun collection was taken, The Times-Picayune newspaper reported. "There are gangs of armed men in the city moving around the city," said Ebbert, the city's homeland security chief. Also, looters tried to break into Children's Hospital, the governor's office said.
On New Orleans' Canal Street, dozens of looters ripped open the steel gates on clothing and jewelry stores and grabbed merchandise. In Biloxi, Miss., people picked through casino slot machines for coins and ransacked other businesses. In some cases, the looting took place in full view of police and National Guardsmen."
Hmmm, no metion of food here.
No doubt racism is pervasive, but there is quite a difference between taking food to survive and stealing all of the guns or electronics from a Walmart. Show me a media report of some gun toting white folks with a barrel of DVD players where they call it finding.
I can totally understand looting even firearms at this point. I probably would be looking for a weapon too, with all the shit that's going down there. It's anarchy.
> there is quite a difference between taking food to survive and stealing all of the uns
In http://discuss.joelonsoftware.com/default.asp?off.9.194906.23#discussTopic194933 you said "If I lived in an area descending to chaos, I'd want a nice sidearm."
Right, and if I busted into a Walmart to get it I'd be a looter.
Fortunately for you, Dennis, you're rich enough that you needn't. BTW a sign outside the armoury near the CNE is advertising part-time jobs in the reserves: 416-200-ARMY ...
The reserves sound like a lot of fun, actually. Saw an article about them in the weekend paper. The reserves up here aren't a trick way to enlist you overseas (as they are in the US), but instead you can volunteer for active duty. Apparently they have a huge list of volunteers in the reserves who'd love to join the Canadian Forces in the former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan.
Dennis, every single picture of a clearly white person, and their action gets called "finding." Not once is there a picture of a black person with a caption of "finding." Every picture of a black person gets a caption with "looting."
to address the original question posed by wondering-
The racial makeup of NOLA is 28.05% White, 67.25% African American. So statistically speaking, you would be more likely to see more African Americans in the media coverage in general.
Wow Peter, you really nailed it with those articles showing white people 'finding' and black people 'looting'. Take some screen shots before its too late, this would make an excellent thesis on media bias.
Mr. Rogers -
Were these stories written by the same reporter, with the same politics, and the same moral inclinations?
Then shut up. :-)
One guy might call stealing necessary supplies during a disaster a crime and one might not. Unless the same guy wrote both stories and called the black folks crooks and the white folks survivalists, then I don´t see a bias here. The "media" is not a singular entity. In fact it´s the ability to present multiple viewpoints (which still sort of exists but is fading fast thanks to corporate ownership) that makes it NOT biased.
