The island revisited

I just got around to seeing The Island. My God. It was horrible. Just barely watchable. Too long, too much product placements and just too fucking badly written. And this is comming from a guy who really really likes both Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johnsson.

I'm just saying, because some of you guys were going like "yay for the island" a month ago.

Didn't seem long to me.
Product placements don't bother me.
What about the writing particularly sucked for you?

Um well, to begin with, technical plot devices: The fan that brought down the structure it was mounted in, because it was going to fast. Engineered by microsoft, I suppose, they had adds all over the place. The Logo that came off the building because people shot at it. The flying two-seater thingy. Visible laser beams. etc. etc.
I can only take so much of that.

Also the story utterly failed to capture me. Bad pacing I suppose. Oscillating between booooooorringgg and over edited action sequences. It was impossible to tell who was going where. Like one minute they are being followed, and then they are alone, with no explanation as to where the persuers went.

But then, you dont really give a shite because by then you have lost all interest in the charachters. (Just shoot the fuckers so the movie can end.)

"because it was going too fast. Engineered by microsoft"

I've gotta admit - we've been accused of a lot of things, but this may be the first time I've seen us accused of going too *fast*

I agree completely, Eric. The Island was terrible. To make matters worse, Scarlett Johanssen wasn't even scantily clad enough for the movie to be even be semi-tolerable with the sound muted.

I did enjoy how Steve Buscemi's character died pointlessly like 30 mins into the movie, though. It was almost as if he had a provision written into his contract, a sort of "early escape" clause.

"I've gotta admit - we've been accused of a lot of things, but this may be the first time I've seen us accused of going too *fast*"

Come to think of it, maybe MS should move into the market of sex toys. The slogan could be "We'll get you there, nice and *slow*" :)

How was she able to sneak a gun back inside?

BTW I loved the movie.

"Some of us guys" may have been saying "Yay for the Island." I was not one of them -- and in fact, at the risk of being a spoiler, highly recommended against the movie.

And yes, having Steve Buscemi's character (one of the few actually likeable and human characters) killed off so early and in such a pointless way was a negative.

On the other hand, you gotta admit that the train-wheel's coming off the truck and smashing everything in sight was kind of cool, if ultimately pointless.

Still -- it's the bottom of the barrel of action movies. Don't see it.
