Maybe him AND Arafat being dead will help solve things. Both of those guys have been hindering things for quite some time, so a little optimism isn't completely unwarranted.

Did anyone else read about the Palestinians invading Egypt?

KC,

Dp you mean the police seizing the crossing at Rafah and EU observers retreating? Yes. What of it? The situation in gaza seems to be going from bad to worse.

Sure things get better for Palestinians. He's the scumbag behind Sabra and Shatila massacre. Simon you are fucking moron.
Permalink Dan Denman

If you think that Sharon is the sole cause of problems for the Palestinians then I think calling someone a moron is more than a little misplaced.

There's no question that Sharon has bullied most everyone to push through the things that he wanted done, whether for good or ill. Right now a power vacuum in Israel is the worst result for Palestine. If Hammas win the elections or do very well and the slight escalation in violence continues then a reoccupation of Gaza is more likely than not. And then you get a new Intifada and a new cycle of violence.

"Oh yeah, things were so great with him alive."

Hey - he implemented the process that's turning Palestine into a country.

"...And then you get a new Intifada and a new cycle of violence."

I just love that phrase "cycle of violence". Did you actually mean a new "intifada" and then Israel trying to defend itself by attacking it's attackers?

The point about violence between communities is that both communities see it as defending their own community. Whether its Israeli/Palestinian, Irish Republican/Loyalist, Hutu/Tutsi or whatever else both sides see themselves as solely in the right.

I personally don't think there will be any resolution between Israel and Palestine until they accept that they have to live together not in two nations, but one.

Simon - but neither of them wants it.

Or, rather, the Palestinians want their own nation, but at the same time they want effortless access to jobs in Israel.

Exactly, they both want a whole country, Palestine can never be a whole country.
Permalink Simon Lucy

Well, Gaza can be a whole country.

Brunei (that of Sultan-richest-man-in-the-world-owns-eight-McLaren-F1s fame) is actually two parts separated by a bit of Malaysia, and they seem to cope. (Although both parts are seaside and the middle bit is just a narrow strip.)

Brunei has a lot of oil.

Gaza has a largely beaten up sea port, one Coca Cola factory and a lot of ruins.

And a huge population.

Some fun can be had by considering Gaza's population density against other climes and remembering that they can actually grow and raise food despite being prohibited from fishing.

Run the numbers.

Huge population? It was ~1.3 million, wasn't it? That's not much, it's less than Estonia.
Permalink Flasher T

Estonia has a square area of 45,200sq km, the Gaza Strip is around 360 sq km.

That's around 125 times the size.

That small? Wow. Didn't realize that.

One thing that the Palestinians want in their new nation is access to their water. IIRC, Israel won't cede to this demand. Israel wants control over all the water.

Long, very long posts of just quoting fail on the copyright issue, they also fail on the entirely too boring to read issue.

That said, as Mr Denman considers me an idiot for not rejoicing because one former Defence Secretary, now PM, is dying because he was in charge during the handover of Shatila to Fascist Christian Falangists I'll say just this.

It is the knee jerk reaction to the events in history which keep us mired in repeating the same tired jokes of history.

I don't gloat because someone is dying, nor do I believe that somehow everything will be alright because the last of the politicians with military leadership (though Netanyahu has Special Forces in his background and was part of the Entebbe ground force) has passed.

Well, sure, if only the Palestinians didn't use access to the ocean to ship in rockets.

Oh, wait, were you saying "access to FRESH water?" That might be a little harder, and harder to justify not giving it to them, as well
Permalink AllanL5

YES. FRESH WATER.

You cannot drink salt water. Gaza doesn't have the resources to desalinate the sea and the West Bank doesn't have the resouces to desalinate the dead sea (if they even have access ).
