It is comical to watch the salary debate.
It took me a long time to learn about this. Salary is just a result of a negotiation. If I knew about the job market, I should have worked on Wall Street right after college with degree oriented to that industry. Look at Wolf of Wall Street movie, do these guys make money the way you do? It does make us look like a bunch of losers.
You can toil 80 hours or more work week for less than 200K while the Wall Street guy makes that regularly as Xmas bonus. If you study math, you should know that you are in the frigging wrong job by comparing the numbers right?
Maybe the geeks don't have an idea how to be bad-ass money grabbers.
By the way, my wife says you guys should set her up with the server in that closet now! Dweeds!
All those Google guys pulling in $500k 3 years after graduation are doing pretty good, better than the average Wall Street newbie, which is a harsh life with few winners.
Both fields are pretty competitive though with high salaries at the top.
With one exception: the geeks at Google has to rack their brain coming up with something that works or fix something that is not working. The guys on Wall Streets only have to worry about losing other people's money; do they really care about other people's money? LOL. I have an ocean front house in AZ to sell you.
Alpha geeks — brin, Page, Gates, Bezos (quit wall street), Ellison- did well. Better it seems even than entrepreneur Wall Street guys.
For wage slave, top tech FANG seems below Wall Street at the median. Upper to top wage slave guys not sure. Maybe Wall Street again.

The "just" word is like "merely", and minimizes any issue it's applied to. Meanwhile, "Salary" rates and negotiation are a result of poorly measured industry conventions, and the mis-match in power between a job applicant who is one of thousands, and an HR drone who has just a few positions open.
The HR drone, and the impersonal company behind them, has NO incentive to pay you any more than they need to pay your worst alternative applicant. You can "negotiate" until you're blue in the face, but you have very little power to actually change the salary they may (or probably may not) offer you.
"just a result of negotiation" completely ignores much of this dynamic.
