gorilla or not gorilla

Google's image recognition algorithm used in image search had a problem. It couldn't tell the difference between black people and gorillas. In fact, if you searched on the term "gorilla" you got back photos of gorillas, and also black people.

A black guy complained. Google said they were really sorry and would fix the algorithm.

After two years of research into improving the algorithm to be able to distinguish between the two, google gave up and now simply doesn't let you search for gorillas in image search.

BTW, that Wired article came out today. If you test their assertion and search for gorillas - you find gorillas.

The wired article references the Google Photos service search, not the general image search.

They probably fixed it the cheap way - manually curated the images.
