Y'all are a bunch of wankers!

New cellphone time

The headphone jack is starting to go on the Motorola, so I need to start looking at new phones.

The Samsung models are either too big, or don't have a 3.5mm jack (they're sucking on Apple's teat), And they're expensive, so I'm looking at 2nd tier manufacturers.

Does anyone have an opinion on the Sony phones? The Xperia XA2 looks nice. World ready, has a jack and a microSD slot. Curved glass which I don't care for..  Unlocked is around $379.

What Moto have you been using? I just switched from a Nexus 5 to a Moto X4.  The X4 is much faster. Do I need to worry about the jack?

Oh, on my Nexus I had a little trouble with the headphone jack. Some W-40 made it all better.

It's from when Google owned Motorola - the Pure Edition.

It's too bad they stopped making it, as you could really customize it, with stuff like a leather or wood back (your choice of several colors or species), not just plastic.

If you can lay hands on phones sold internationally try out
Xaomi phones such as Mi A1
Or Lenovo such as K8 note
Or Oppo Realme

For unlocked inexpensive, but feature rich  Androids of Chinese origins : India can be a good place to pick up. English menu and low costs, may not be latest model available in China

The problem with a lot of the Chinese phones is they are often not an Android licensee. Usually because they can't install the Play Store app -- because it won't work behind the People's Firewall.

why is the headphone issue so important to you?

Just get a headset or an adapter? Seems no big deal

Phones listed above that are created by Chinese companies but sold in many Asian nations do not have many of those problems typically associated with buying from unknown sources.

Most of these phones are name brands with large volume sales. They can be found on local Amazon (viz Amazon.in) or Wal-Mart's flipkart ...Don't have to risk Ali Baba or eBay.

I've got several stringent requirements from smartphones:

1) No ping pong rackets. 5.5' is already too big (which puts even Xiaomi Mi A1 off the table). The current tennis size trend... they can and should shove them up their ass.

2) I want the capacitive control keys. The current trend of all embedded in the screen... samewise.

So it's probably gonna be a Xiaomi Mi 5s for me:

Also like Anon said, I can find the phone locally:

Currently the $250 model is sold out but I hope they'll replentish the stock.

You guys are big spenders. Pick Moto G6 and save money.

The current phone is 5.6" and I wouldn't want anything larger, and I'll probably go slightly smaller.

Like you said - ping pong paddle sized is nuts.

I chose Moto X4 over the Moto G6.  Reviews on the two are really close. Most reviewers gave the X4 a slight nod.

I've had it less than a week. So far I really like it, compared to my old Nexus 5.

How do people manage with these massive phones?? Even the Xiaomi Mi 5s is a good 1cm longer than my Moto G version 1, which is ~65mm x ~130mm x ~8mm. Fits easily in my pocket, even with a case on it. Each time I look at replacing it, it seems like every other cheap phone is enormous by comparison, and so I give up. And now it's been 4½ years and I've still got it :(

(Luckily, smartphones all look mostly the same, even old ones, so nobody notices, unlike when I had my non-smart Nokia.)

I resent having to pay the Apple tax, but the iPhone SE looks like a nice size, so once mine dies, it might have to be that...

>>so nobody notices

Why do you care what others think?

I don't, but it saves a bit of time when people don't feel the need to mock you for having an old-style phone with keypad buttons.

All flagship Samsung phones have headphone jacks.
