hand foot & mouth disease
It seems I have a mild case. No official diagnosis, but symptoms match. No fever, and I'm mostly okay (giant ugly blisters are on my feet but just one or two little ones on my hands.) My big worry is that I'll give it to the baby, and I want to somehow keep the other babies in the day care from catching it. Gah.

I've dealt with more illness in the last 6 months than in the last 10 years combined. I did not realize that having a kid does this to you.

DON'T let the baby get this. He will be MISERABLE and so will you.
My daughter got this at age 2.
You should probably call out of work and keep him out of daycare in case he does have it.
Wash your hands and I'd even suggest wearing gloves when you hold/change/dress/feed him.
Seriously.

Dude, Brice, I do NOT agree with you, I was agreeing with Billy the Fish.
My kid is in day care, which is a disease-infested place and a place to pick up horrible illnesses like this one.

I'd also call the daycare and tell them it may be going around. If they are responsible at all, they'll warn other parents.
Hand, foot, mouth is AWFUL and it lasts FOREVER.

Muppet, it's probably too late (two days of exposure before I figured out what it was, first blisters appeared Friday evening). But I will be diligent with the hand washing before seeing him.

The day care has been informed. They're not letting me in for any reason at this point. They're willing to take the baby, but they'll come out and get him from me and bring him and his stuff out to me in the evening. I can't pump in there until the blisters are gone.

Our daughter had a rash last year that turned out not to be Foot and Mouth. Even though she didn't have all the symptoms of F&M, they were freaked out about it at pre-school until we got three doctors to say "no, it's just a boring rash."

actually, I'm not sure what he was accusing me of, as my kid is fine, I'm the one with the blisters. perhaps he thinks that contracting a viral illness is a symptom of poor hygiene? He probably never gets the common cold, either.

It's when the blisters pop that it's most transmittable, if I recall correctly. I'd still consider gloves. They may be uncomfortable for him when you're handling him but it will be far superior to the agony of hand, foot, and mouth.
Sarah could barely eat for 6 weeks. I had to numb her with Orajel for every meal and even then she howled.

I've been googling, and it's most contagious during the first week and is spread through the usual ways (coughing, sneezing, etc) in addition to if the blisters pop. I'm not certain they will - the ones that have turned into real blisters have actually been shrinking and there are a lot fewer of them today than there were yesterday. So it's probably getting better. I don't have any blisters in my mouth (thank goodness, that sounds incredibly unpleasant).

If they pop when you're wiping his mouth with a cloth you'll notice afterward, not before, and you'll wish you'd worn gloves.

Hope you feel better. Be careful.

Well, I can tell you this much - if I had a kid and I thought the origin of ANY disease resulted from my placement of that child in a day care facility. I would REMOVE THE CHILD IMMEDIATELY.
The poster acknowledged that the day care was "disease-infested" so I think the parent is a bad parent if the child is not allowed to be removed...
Actually, I really don't care - I was just responding to the posting using my own style and remarks.

If you've never had a child before, you probably don't know that ALL day cares and schools are disease infested, particularly in the winter. Unless they're home schooled, every kid goes through a phase where they are constantly sick, and it will either be when they start day care or when they start school.

And you'd be doing your child a disservice.
You *want* your kid to get these illnessnes. It builds their immune systems up for later life.
Good example: Measles.
Bad as a child, potentially lethal as an adult.
xampl (iPhone)
December 14th, 2009 3:07pm
Brice.. To enlighten your ignorance.
It’s not the day care that is disease infested. It the other kids in the day care. Once a kid, for the first time is around a group of other people regularly, he\she keeps getting sick until his\her immune system builds up to the point where he\she can fight off this stuff.
If you pull you kid out of Day Care you are just delaying the inevitable. (Till First, he\she has to start school)
I would love to see the conversation you have with your wife when you “REMOVE THE CHILD IMMEDIATELY” from daycare and tell he to quit her job.

HFMD is not a fucking disease that I think a child should "Get" to boost his/her immune system.
That philosophy, in my opinion relates more to BACTERIAL illnesses, ASSHAT not VIRAL illnesses.....guess what?
Did you know that there is no fucking cure for HFMD?
The literature I researched on it suggests that because it is VIRAL in nature, there is no fucking cure....it's kind of like HIV.....you can CONTROL it but you can't CURE it...
So, you fucking ill-informed retarded parents out there who bash me for saying I would remove a child immediately from day care....that's what I would do.....and I think I have a very good reason for it...
For you myopic thinkers out there who scratch your ass in response saying that "yea, ok, remove the child and who is going to watch him/her - because no one can afford not to work and we are a dual income household..."
My response to that remark is that YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE HAD KIDS BECAUSE YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE KIDS......
So in my world, if I had a kid or kids, I WOULD be able to REMOVE them because I WOULD HAVE THE INCOME TO SUPPORT THAT MOVE.....
This fucking board is as retarded in its child rearing philosophies as it is in its software development "thoughts" on the issue.

Hey, Brice, chicken pox is viral in nature, mild when a child catches it, and sometimes fatal when an adult does. Your way of thinking would put someone at risk of dying from something as simple as chicken pox as an adult when they could have just gotten mildly ill as a child.

Here is my prediction for the rest your life:
1) All you friends get married and start family leaving you to “Party” by yourself.
2) You never find love. Not once. Not one meaningful relationship, AND you keep telling yourself you are better off for it.
You are heading down a horrible path…
I hope you come from a large family, and you have many nieces and nephews, so you can save some long term joy in your life.

YES, in this way it is similar to the COMMON COLD, or even the more common INFLUENZA. actually, if it were BACTERIAL, we'd be treating with ANTIBIOTICS. But because it is VIRAL, we allow the IMMUNE SYSTEM to deal with it. Luckily, most of us HAVE an IMMUNE SYSTEM and given a week or two it can COMPLETELY CURE just about ANY common illness out there (and in fact DOES on a regular basis).
Wow, that was fun. I see the appeal.
