Sanding our assholes with 150 grit. Slowly. Lovingly.

I hate to say it, but Simon has a point

about personal information (IP, email address, deleted posts with personal info (like my home address and telephone number)) that is in that ?off database, along with all the stuff you guys want to preserve.

There's firstly, a real market value to that data, which is somewhat disturbing, and secondly, a lot of personal information that people had a reasonable expectation of privacy to.

I think we ought to be VERY selective about who has access to that data (if anyone ought to have it at all).

It's awful to say, but I don't know that I know any one of you that well that I'd hand over all that stuff to you, unless maybe it was Aaron Stanton, who isn't really the right guy to administer it either if only for his level of involvement in all of this which is almost none.  :)

Yeah, I'd trust Simon, the Notorious T.A.W. or Aaron.  I might even trust you, Mark :-).  But that's only because you have a bigger rod in your ass about privacy than I do.

Yeah. Whoever gets that also has the opportunity to learn the identity of all the anonymous posters. Fun fun fun.

Thinking about this more, I think that I'd rather the archive stay lost than end up passed around to anyone.  No offense to present company but there's a WHOLE lot of grey area here with the information available in that database.

I'd have thought the ideal solution would be to extract the undeleted text into a form(s) suitable for here, Simon's place or wherever and junk the original...I'd also assume that it would be a question Joel would want an answer to before releasing it.

Agreed.  Unless someone can provide a scrubbed version (comments and names only) I don't think it should be passed around.

The best way to get a scrubbed version is for the forum to reappear and be re-spidered. I wouldn't want to ask Joel to do the scrubbing.

I still think you're a bunch of panzy prissy pantses.

Hasn't there already been a spidering?

Can't we use what JD has?

It'd be more difficult maybe, but not much so, since I don't think we were really looking to set up a FogBugz instance anyway so much as cram the ?off data model into a new form.

Or we could just let it go.

You may have liked the archive, but when was the last time you really used it anyway?

I vote (again) for just letting it go.  I think the privacy considerations outweigh the value (even taking into account Crazy Asian Lady).

Totally agree. We posted there thinking Joel would have it and it would slide off the screen in a couple dozen posts. Now it's in the hands of a bunch of "psychopaths" to do what the want with?

That's a violation of the ?off privacy policy!

Thanks, muppet.

Actually, my utter lack of involvment probably makes me an even better candidate for holding the data.  Of course, that also means I'd likely just sit on it and not do anything with it.  It might never see the light of day, lazy SOB that I am.

But it'd be safe.

I figured a moderator would be okay, since you guys already voted us the rights to see it in the first place...?

But the context is now different, Philo.

I don't think I'd have a problem with YOU having it, or Mark or even Simon or Dennis, but I might have a problem with NEW moderators on CoT having it.

Heck I'll tell you that *I* certainly don't want it, and I was a moderator.  :)

I would be amazed, and concerned, if Joel gave up the database including email & IP addresses. That is a tremendous breach of privacy, and actually could get him in legal trouble.

Not trying to be a bitch, but it's definitely a no no. People did have an expectation of privacy.
